Rejected and Pregnant I Fled The Pack novel Chapter 84

Chapter 84

I found him seated at his desk, papers spread before him, looking more composed than he had during our previous conversations, though something in his posture still carried the same worn, exhausted quality that had settled into him since my mother’s departure.

“You wanted to see me,” I said, remaining standing near the doorway rather than immediately settling into the chair across from him.

“Sit, please.” He gestured toward the chair, and I complied slowly, still watching him carefully. “I wanted to discuss something directly with you, rather than continuing to simply demonstrate change through actions alone.

“Alright,” I said carefully.

“I’ve been in contact with the council,” he said, folding his hands together on the desk. “Formally requesting to step back from active leadership responsibilities. Not immediately, not without proper transition planning, but within the next several months, transferring full authority to you rather than waiting for the traditional succession timeline.”

I stared at him, genuinely caught off guard by the announcement. “You want to step down. Now, after thirty years.

“I think it’s time,” he said quietly. “I’ve spent these past weeks trying to actually reckon with everything I’ve done -to your mother, to you, to Evelyn, to this entire pack’s culture around what leadership actually requires. I don’t think I’m the right person to continue leading, not if I actually want to demonstrate genuine change rather than simply performing it while still holding onto the authority that made all that damage possible in the first place.”

“Why now,” I asked carefully, still processing the magnitude of what he was proposing. “Why not simply continue as before, quietly, without any formal transition?”

“Because actions matter more than words, exactly as you told me,” he said. “And I can’t think of a more significant action than actually relinquishing the control I’ve clung to for thirty years, rather than simply talking about wanting to be different.”

I sat with that for a long moment, turning over everything it implied-not just the practical logistics of transition, but the deeper, more significant question of whether this represented genuine transformation or simply another calculated maneuver I hadn’t yet learned to fully recognize.

“I appreciate you telling me directly,” I said finally. “I need time to actually consider what this means, practically. And I’ll need to discuss it with Evelyn too, given how directly it affects all of our futures.”

“Of course,” he said, something almost relieved in his tired expression at my measured, careful response rather than immediate rejection or suspicion. “Take whatever time you need. I’m not asking for an immediate answer.”

I left his study a while later, my mind spinning with the weight of everything he’d just proposed, and made my way back toward my own quarters, eager to actually process this with Evelyn, to share both the morning’s small, hopeful kiss and this larger, more complicated development.

I found her in the kitchen, feeding Willow, and settled across from her, watching her expression shift from warm welcome to careful attention as she registered something significant in my own demeanor.

“What happened,” she asked.

“My father wants to step down,” I said. “Formally transfer leadership to me within the next several months.”

Her eyebrows rose, genuine surprise crossing her tired features. “That’s… a significant development.”

“I don’t know what to make of it yet,” I admitted. “Part of me wants to believe it’s genuine, especially after everything these past weeks-the rogue attack, the restraint with my mother, now this. But another part of me keeps waiting for the actual angle, the thing I haven’t figured out yet.”

“That’s fair,” Evelyn said, adjusting Willow gently against her shoulder. “You don’t have to resolve that uncertainty today. Just take it in, let it sit alongside everything else you’re still carefully weighing.”
