CHAPTER 133
Alpha Jaden’s POV

I was in my office reviewing patrol reports when Derek finally returned from his mission to Shadowfang Pack. The journey back had taken him most of the day, and by the look on his face, the news wasn’t good.
“Alpha,” he said, entering with obvious reluctance. “I’ve delivered your message.”
I set down the papers and studied his expression. “And?”
“Clara refused to see you.” The words came out flat, matter–of–fact. “She said she wouldn’t be going anywhere and that she had no interest in revisiting the past.”
The rejection stung more than I wanted to admit. I’d been hoping that despite everything, there might still be some part of her that remembered what we’d had together.
“How did she seem?” I asked, trying to keep my voice neutral. “Was she… well?”
Derek shifted uncomfortably. “She seemed fine, Alpha. More than fine, actually. She was sitting on Alpha Darius’s lap during our meeting, and they appeared very… close.”
The image made my chest tighten. Clara, the woman I’d known as strong but reserved, sitting on another alpha’s lap like she belonged there.
“She’s his mate now,” Derek continued. “He introduced her as such, and it was clear that their relationship
is… intimate.”
I gripped the edge of my desk. “What else?”
“There’s more, Alpha.” Derek’s voice grew even more reluctant. “Before I left this morning, Alpha Darius
made an announcement to his entire pack. He declared that Clara would be their new Luna. There’s going to be a full ceremony.”
I stared at him, certain I’d misheard. “He what?”
“He announced her as Luna, Alpha. The whole pack was gathered, and he made it official. They’re planning
a ceremony.”
A bitter laugh escaped me. “That’s ridiculous. It’s obviously a desperate ploy by Darius to discourage me from pursuing her. He’s trying to make me think she’s moved on completely.”
Derek looked uncertain. “Alpha, it seemed very real. The pack was shocked, but he was serious about it.
“It’s theater,” I said dismissively. “Darius is playing games, trying to make Clara seem more important than
she is.”
But even as I said it, doubt gnawed at me. Would Darius really go that far just to discourage me? Making
someone Luna wasn’t a casual decision, even for a show.
My thoughts were interrupted by Ryan bursting through my office door without knocking, his face flushed

“Alpha, you need to see this,” he said, pulling out his phone. “An sss just came in from Shadowfang Pack.”
I took his phone and read the message on the screen. The subject line made my blood run cold: “Official Luna Ceremony Invitation – Clara Ashburn & Alpha Darius Kincaid.”
“You are cordially invited to witness the Luna ceremony of Clara Ashburn and Alpha Darius Kincaid of Shadowfang Pack,” I read aloud. The sss went on to provide ceremony details and mentioned that formal physical invitations would be sent within the week.
The words made my stomach drop. This wasn’t theater. This was real.

“There are more coming in,” Ryan said quietly. “The pack’s sss system is getting flooded with similar messages. This is being sent to every major pack in the region.”

I stared at the screen, my mind racing. Clara was really going to become Luna of Shadowfang Pack. The
woman I’d rejected, the one I’d thought too strong–willed for her own good, was about to hold one of the most powerful positions a woman could achieve in our world.
My phone rang, interrupting my spiraling thoughts. The

when I answered. “I just got the most interesting email.”
“That’s the one. Congratulations, by the way. Clara looked absolutely radiant at the Regional Council
meeting. You must be so proud of how well she’s doing.”
The words made my jaw clench. Garrett knew Clara had been my mate. He was either being incredibly
tactless or deliberately twisting the knife.
“She’s not my mate anymore,” I said through gritted teeth. “I rejected her ages ago.”
“Oh right, I forgot.” But his tone suggested he hadn’t forgotten at all. “Well, she certainly landed on her feet, didn’t she? Alpha Darius is quite the catch. And becoming Luna of Shadowfang Pack…that’s quite an upgrade from whatever she had before.”
The casual cruelty in his voice made my hands clench into fists. “Is there a point to this call, Garrett?”
“Just wanted to make sure you were alright, old friend. I know it must be difficult seeing your former mate
do so well without you. But I’m sure you’re happy for her success.”
“I’m fine,” I lied.
