Liana’s PUV

The next morning, I woke with a new sense of purpose burning in my chest. Clara thought she was safe in her new pack, protected by Alpha Darius and his warriors. She thought being far away would keep her safe from me.

She was wrong.

I dressed carefully, choosing clothes that made me look put together and strong. The broken woman who had been searching for ghost babies was gone. In her place stood someone with a mission.

I found Jaden in his office, already buried in paperwork. When I knocked and entered, he barely looked up. “What do you need?” he asked without lifting his eyes from the papers.

“I wanted to talk about the patrol schedules,” I said, moving to stand beside his desk. “I noticed some problems that could be fixed.”

This got his attention. He looked up at me with surprise.

“You’ve been looking at the patrol schedules?”

“I am Luna of this pack,” I said firmly. “It’s my job to help you protect our people.”

For the first time in days, I saw something other than disgust in his eyes. It wasn’t love, but it wasn’t complete dismissal either.

“Show me,” he said.

I spent the next hour going through patrol routes with him, pointing out areas where we could make things better. I’d done my homework, studying the reports until I could talk about them like I knew what I was

doing.

When we finished, Jaden leaned back in his chair and looked at me.

“This is good work,” he said quietly. “I’m glad to see you’re taking your duties seriously again.”

The praise felt like water to a dying plant. I’d missed this. I’d missed being useful to him.

“I want to be the Luna you need,” said.

“Then keep this up,” he replied. “The pack needs to see their Luna working, not falling apart.”

I nodded, remembering that he still cared about what the pack thought of me. That meant he still cared about us, even if he was hiding it.

After leaving his office, I walked through the packhouse with new confidence. I had work to do, and it wasn’t the kind Jaden expected.

For two hours, I waited in the bushes, watching and listening. Shadowfang Pack was known for good security, and I expected their patrols to be careful and well–planned.

But I saw nothing. No movement, no sounds of wolves coming.

Maybe I was in the wrong place, or maybe their patrol times were different than I’d thought.

Frustrated but not giving up, I made my way home as the sun began to set.

The next morning, I woke before dawn. If Clara was anything like she used to be, she would be an early riser. She’d always liked morning runs, saying they helped her focus for the day.

I told Jaden I was having trouble sleeping and that an early morning run might help tire me out.

“I’ll be back before breakfast,” I promised.

He was still half–asleep, so he just grunted and rolled over.

I shifted and made my way toward the border area, getting there just as the first light of dawn was touching the sky. This time, I found a better hiding spot in thick bushes that gave me a clear view of Shadowfang territory.

And this time, I got what I was looking for.
