CHAPTER 143
Alpha Jaden’s POV
I rubbed my temples as Alpha Marcus’s voice droned on through the phone. We’d been discussing territory disputes for over an hour, and my patience was wearing thin.
“The eastern borders need better patrol schedules,” Marcus was saying. “My pack has been seeing more rogue activity lately.”
“I understand your concerns,” I replied, shuffling through the papers on my desk. “But we can’t spare more warriors right now.”
The conversation continued, covering patrol routes, supply shortages, and various pack politics that normally would have held my attention. But today, something felt off. There was an unease in my chest that I couldn’t shake.
Maybe it was stress from everything that had happened lately. Liana’s breakdown, the constant comparisons to Clara, the way my pack looked at me with barely hidden disappointment.
“Jaden, are you listening?” Marcus’s voice cut through my thoughts.
“Yes, sorry. You were saying something about the supply routes?”
We wrapped up the call with agreements about increased communication and shared resources. Nothing groundbreaking, but necessary pack business.
I leaned back in my chair and closed my eyes, trying to ease the tension in my shoulders. The office felt stuffy, and the mountain of paperwork on my desk seemed to grow bigger every day.
That’s when it happened.
My wolf suddenly perked up in my mind, alert and excited in a way I hadn’t felt in months.
“She’s here,” he said, his voice filled with something I couldn’t quite identify. Hope? Longing?
I sat up straighter, confused. “Who’s here?”
“Clara. Our mate. She’s here, on our territory.”
r
My blood ran cold. That was impossible. Clara was hundreds of miles away, probably preparing for her Luna ceremony with Alpha Darius.
“You’re wrong,” I told my wolf. “Clara isn’t here.”
“I can feel her,” he insisted. “She’s close. Very close.”
I stood up from my desk, pacing to the window. The packhouse grounds looked normal. A few pack members were going about their daily business, nothing unusual.
But my wolf was getting more agitated by the second.
6
“Find her” he demanded. “We have to find her”
This is ridiculous,” I muttered. “She’s not here.”
But even as I said it doubt crept into my mind. There was something different in the air, a scent or presence that I couldn’t quite place.
My wolf had never been wrong about Claca before. Even when I’d rejected her, he’d known she was our true mate. He’d fought me every step of the way.
“Just humor me,” my wolf said. “If I’m wrong, what have you lost? But if I’m right…”
I didn’t want to think about what it would mean if he was right. If Clara was really here, on my territory, it would change everything.
Against my better judgment, I left my office and walked through the packhouse. I tried to look casual, like I was just making my usual rounds, but inside my wolf was going crazy.
“Which direction?” I asked.
“East,” he said immediately. “Toward the old buildings.”
I made my way outside, nodding to pack members as I passed. The afternoon sun was warm on my face, but I barely noticed. My entire focus was on following whatever my wolf was sensing.
The further east I walked, the more certain my wolf became.
“Closer,” he kept saying. “She’s so close.”
I reached the edge of our main territory, where the old storage buildings sat unused. This area was usually empty, nothing but abandoned structures and overgrown paths.
But today, something was different.
I could see two figures standing near one of the buildings. As I got closer, I realized they were warriors. Marcus and Jake, if I wasn’t mistaken.
What were they doing all the way out here?
“Marcus,” I called out as I approached.
Both warriors immediately stood at attention, but instead of looking nervous, they appeared relieved to
see me.
“Alpha,” Marcus said, bowing his head respectfully. “Perfect timing. We’ve been following your orders.”
I frowned, confused. “My orders?”
“Yes, Alpha,” Jake said quickly. “Luna Liana told us you wanted this building secured. We’ve been maintaining guard rotations just as instructed.”
My wolf’s excitement spiked. If Liana had told them I’d ordered this, and if my wolf was right about Clara being close…
CHAPTER
“Good work. I said, studying their faces. They looked proud to be carrying out what they believed were my direct orders. “How long have you been stationed here?
“Since yesterday morning. Marcus replied. “Luna said it was a matter of pack security that required
absolute discretion.”
“And you’ve followed those orders exactly?”
“Yes, Alpha,” both warriors said in unison.
“Excellent,” I said, moving toward the building. “I need to inspect what you’ve been protecting”
Neither warrior moved to stop me. Why would they? As far as they knew, I was the one who’d ordered the guard detail in the first place.
“Should we accompany you, Alpha?” Jake asked.
“No,” I said quickly. “Continue your watch and keep up the good work.”
