CHAPTER 60-2

I nodded, gathering my water bottle and towel. Good for you.

So what do you say? One quick round?

Maybe another time,” I said, heading toward the pack house.

Jake jogged to catch up with me. Are you always this hard to convince?

I’m just focused on my own training,” I replied.

All work and no play,he said with a laugh. You should learn to have some fun.”

I was getting tired of this conversation. Young wolves like Jake reminded me too much of the pack

members back in Shadowcrest. Always assuming they knew better. Always trying to prove something.

I have plenty of fun,I said.

With who? I never see you hanging out with anyone except during fights.

We’d reached the steps leading up to the main entrance. I paused, turning to face him fully.

Jake, right?I said.

He nodded, looking pleased that I remembered his name.

I appreciate the offer to spar,” I continued. But I’m not interested. Thanks anyway.”

His face fell slightly, but he nodded. Sure. Maybe some other time.

Maybe.

I turned to head inside, done with the conversation. But as I reached for the door handle, I heard quick footsteps behind me.

Before I could turn around, someone jumped on my back.

My training kicked in immediately. I grabbed the person’s arm, bent forward, and flipped them over my shoulder. They hit the ground hard with a grunt of pain.

I spun around, ready to continue the fight, and drew my fist back for a punch.

Wait!the person on the ground gasped. Stop!

It was Jake.

I completed the punch anyway, connecting with his shoulder as he tried to roll away. Then I stepped forward and delivered a sharp kick to his ribs.

Stop!he yelled again, curling into a ball. I was just playing!

Playing?I stood over him, hands still clenched into fists. You attacked me from behind.

It was a joke!he wheezed, holding his side where my kick had landed. I was just trying to be playful!

Other pack members had started to gather, drawn by the commotion. I could see them watching from windows and doorways, some looking amused, others concerned.

That wasn’t playful,I told Jake coldly. That was stupid.”

He struggled to sit up, wincing. “I didn’t think you’d actually hurt me.

Then you don’t know me very well.”

I reached down and grabbed the front of his shirt, pulling him partially upright. He tried to pull away, but I

held him firm.

Let me make something clear,I said, keeping my voice low so only he could hear. I don’t like surprises. I

don’t like being touched without permission. And I definitely don’t like being attacked from behind, even as

a joke.

Okay, okay,he said quickly. I get it. I’m sorry.

Are you?I asked. Or are you just sorry because you’re the one on the ground?

Before he could answer, a sharp voice cut through the morning air.

Clara!

I looked up to see Xander striding across the training ground toward us. His expression was serious, all

business.

I released Jake’s shirt and stepped back. He slumped to the ground, still holding his ribs.
