CHAPTE 80
Alpha Darius’s POV
I watched from the hospital waiting area as Dr. Hayes finished his exammation of Killian’s monitors. The conversation about Clara’s effect on his recovery was making my wolf restless in ways I didn’t like.
After a while, Dr. Hayes and the nurse prepared to leave Clara alone with Killian. Before the doctor stepped out of the room, I could hear him speaking to Clara.
“Please stay with him,” Dr. Hayes said, his voice carrying a note of urgency. “For Alpha Killian’s swift recovery. Your presence seems to be the key to his healing.”
The doctor’s words hit me like a punch to the gut. He was asking Clara to stay close to another Alpha, another man, for his benefit. Everything in me rebelled against the idea.
I positioned myself where I could see through the window into Killian’s room while remaining in the hallway. My hands clenched into fists as I watched Clara settle into the chair beside his bed.
She looked concerned, genuinely worried about his condition. The sight of her caring for another man made my blood boil.
Clara was my mate. Yes, I was yet to tell her, but that didn’t change the fundamental truth. The bond between us was real, even if she didn’t understand it yet. And no one was taking what was his.
I had found her broken and bleeding in my territory. I had saved her life, given her protection, trained her, made her stronger. She belonged with me, not sitting/beside some other Alpha’s hospital bed.
The rational part of my mind knew that Clara was only there because she felt responsible for Killian’s injuries. He had saved her life during the rock slide, and she was the type of person who honored debts like that.
But rationality wasn’t what was driving me right now. My wolf was in control, and he was furious about another Alpha being so close to our mate.
I didn’t want to leave her alone with Killian. I didn’t want to leave her alone with any man, but especially not him. There was something about the way Killian looked at Clara that set my teeth on edge.
I had seen the connection between them in the training ring that first day. The way they had stared at each other, the strange energy that had passed between them. It was the same kind of connection that existed between mates.
The thought made my wolf snarl with possessive rage.
I was so focused on watching Clara through the window that I didn’t notice Xander approaching until he was right beside me.
“Alpha,” Xander said quietly. “You should return to your room to rest. You’ve been standing here for hours.”

didn’t take my eyes off Clara. “I’m fine.”
“You haven’t slept since yesterday. The pack needs you at full strength, especially with all the storm
damage to deal with.”
Xander was right, but I couldn’t bring myself to leave. Not when Clara was in there with Killian, not when the doctor had specifically asked her to stay close to him.
“I said I’m fine,” I repeated, my voice carrying enough authority to end the discussion.
Xander hesitated for a moment, then tried a different approach. “Is there artything specific you need me to handle while you’re here?”
That question sparked an idea. If I couldn’t get Clara away from Killian, maybe I could get Killian away
from Clara.
“Actually, yes,” I said, finally turning to look at Xander. “I want you to create a foolproof strategy to clear the main road in forty–eight hours.”
Xander looked surprised. “Forty–eight hours? Alpha, that’s an extremely tight timeline. The damage is extensive.”
“I don’t care how extensive it is. I want that road cleared and passable within two days.”
“May I ask why the sudden urgency? Yesterday you seemed satisfied with the week–long timeline.”
I turned back to watch Clara through the window. “I want Killian out of my pack the moment he wakes up and is cleared for travel.”
Xander was quiet for a moment, and I could tell he was putting the pieces together. He was smart enough to understand that my sudden urgency had everything to do with the man currently lying in the hospital
bed.
“I’ll mobilize every available worker,” Xander said finally. “We’ll bring in equipment from neighboring territories if necessary.”
“Good. And Xander?”
“Yes, Alpha?”
“Make it happen. Whatever it takes.”

Xander nodded and headed off to organize the accelerated road clearing effort. I resumed my position by the window, watching Clara sit quietly beside Killian’s bed.
For the next hour, nothing much happened. Clara remained in her chair, occasionally checking the monitors or adjusting his blankets. Killian stayed unconscious, his breathing steady but deep.
I found myself studying every detail of the scene. The way Clara’s hair fell over her shoulder as she leaned forward. The concerned expression on her face as she watched his vital signs. The gentle way she straightened his blanket when it shifted.

Every caring gesture she made toward Killian fett like a knife twisting in my chest.
was busy formulating backup plans for the road clearing operation and how to get Killian out of my pack
when I heard movement from inside the room. I looked up quickly to see what was happening.
Killian was waking up.
His eyes were fluttering open, and he was trying to orient himself to his surroundings. Clara immediately leaned forward, her face filled with relief that he was conscious.
