consequences.”

“And what about you?” Jenna whispered. “What’s your consequence for not believing me?”

“Urrghh,” Nina stood, pretending to wince as she held her belly. “Come now, Ryker. Let’s not upset her further. She looks tired.”

Jenna stared at her, disbelief and fury warring in her chest. She turned back to Ryker. “You really don’t see it, do you? She’s playing you.”

“And you’re not?” he countered. “You’re just conveniently the victim in every situation?”

Jenna felt herself losing it.

She wanted to scream. To cry. To grab him and shake the truth into him. But all she could do was nod.

The servants whispered. They didn’t always realize she was nearby. She caught words like “lunatic” and “jealous” floating in the air like pollen.

Nina, of course, insisted Jenna serve her tray personally. Ryker wasn’t around-again. Jenna didn’t know where he had vanished to these days. He hadn’t said another word since sentencing her to this humiliation.

Nina lounged in the sunroom in a silk robe, her feet propped on a velvet pillow, holding a book she clearly wasn’t reading. Her perfect blonde waves were untouched by sleep or stress.

“You’re late,” she said, not looking up.

Jenna set the tray down with trembling hands.

“Careful,” Nina said with a smile. “Wouldn’t want you to trip and make me fall again. My babies are still recovering, you know.”

Jenna stiffened. “I didn’t-”
