She frowned deeper.
Then poured it over a sacred rune-carved bowl.
The blood sizzled and the rune cracked.
The healer stepped back, her face drained of color.
“What is it?” Jenna asked, her voice barely more than a whisper.
“You shouldn’t be alive.”
Jenna froze. “What?”
Something inside you is resisting your pregnancy. But it’s not your body, it’s your spirit. Your wolf is rejecting something. Someone.”
Jenna’s breath caught.
The healer turned to her sharply. “Who did you bind with?”
Jenna swallowed. “Alpha Ryker.”
The woman’s eyes narrowed. “Did he mark you?”
“No,” Jenna whispered. “He… he didn’t mark me.”
“Then the bond is unsealed. But your body is responding as if you were bound. Something’s wrong. Deeply wrong.”
Jenna’s head throbbed.
“But… the babies?”
“I don’t know if they’re truly his.”
“What do you mean?”
“There’s a bloodline in you that’s hidden, maybe dormant. Whatever Ryker’s done, he’s disrupted that. And it’s fighting back.”
Jenna stared at the cracked rune. “What happens if it wins?”/
“You die,” the healer said bluntly. “And so do the children.””
The words hit like thunder.
“But if it loses,” the healer continued, softer now, “I don’t know who survives.”
“I thought it was dehydration. Starvation, even. But what’s happening inside you, it’s not just physical. Your bloodline is rejecting him. Possibly even cursed.”

Jenna’s throat went dry. “Cursed?”
“You’re carrying more than children,” the healer said softly. “There’s something powerful in your blood, Jenna. Something hidden.”
