Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 15

Emma felt much more grounded once she had her domestic bank card in hand.

Mr. Hughes escorted her to her car and couldn't help but ask the question that had been burning in his mind. "Ms. Lockwood, since you just set up your card, how did you pay your rent earlier?"

"I'll pay him after I live there for a bit. Otherwise, how would he know how long I'm staying and how much to charge?"

Mr. Hughes froze, but he didn't press the matter.

While helping her set up the account, he had watched her effortlessly transfer millions of dollars into it. It was perfectly normal for someone that wealthy to have powerful connections. Otherwise, why would the boss randomly gift her a car?

Even though Emma didn't understand the domestic rental market, she sensed something was off the moment Mr. Hughes asked his question.

She held her phone, pondering for a good while, before opening her chat with Carter.

She wanted to ask about the apartment directly but feared it might come off as presumptuous. After some thought, she sent a different message.

[I'd like to treat you to dinner. When are you free, Carter?]

She locked her screen, assuming a busy man like him wouldn't see the message anytime soon.

But the moment the screen went black, a reply popped up.

[I'm free whenever you are.]

Emma searched online for high-end restaurants in the capital. Looking at the prices, she picked the most expensive one.

[The Cyan. Tomorrow at 4 PM?]

Carter smiled when he saw the restaurant's name. He replied with an "Okay" and then looked up at his assistant.

"Bring me all the contracts scheduled for tomorrow. I'm working overtime tonight." He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, his expression turning focused. Then, as if suddenly remembering something, he looked up again. "Notify The Cyan. Ensure they have premium ingredients like white truffles and caviar fully stocked for tomorrow."

The assistant nodded and jotted it down. Frowning, Carter added, "No, she's been living abroad for years. She might be sick of all that. Have them prepare more local specialties."

"Understood." The assistant wrote that down too.

Carter seemed completely absorbed in his planning. "Actually, have them prepare the Eight Delicacies of Mountains and Seas. She'll probably like that."

"Got it."

What did that have to do with him wanting to shower her with gifts?

"Just get it done."

The moment he finished speaking, the office door swung open, and Percy strolled in casually.

"Carter, why were you so close to Emma outside the summit venue today?" Percy found it too weird. Once was a coincidence, but twice?

Everyone had seen it during the day. Emma had literally sat on his cousin's jacket—a custom piece worth thousands of dollars, just draped over a stone sphere.

Carter stared at him darkly, completely ignoring his question, and said coldly, "Don't you know how to knock before entering my office?"

"But I never knock," Percy replied, confused. His cousin had always spoiled him and never cared about trivial rules like this.

Carter coldly withdrew his gaze. "Just because I never corrected you doesn't mean you were right. If you have nothing else to say, get out."

Percy was utterly stunned. But before he could recover, his cousin spoke again.

"From now on, you won't need to bounce between domestic and overseas projects anymore. I'll be cutting off that card I gave you."
