Emma unpacked her things in her temporary apartment while talking on the phone.
"It's definitely more comfortable being back home. Plus, I think my luck has gotten better since I returned. I went to the mall, entered a raffle, and won a VIP gold card! I don't know the exact limit, but even after buying tons of stuff, it still has a balance."
The person on the other end seemed to be working, occasionally mentioning business matters while responding to Emma.
"Be careful of scams. Once your third brother finishes his competition, I'll have him arrange a few bodyguards for you domestically," Julian said.
Emma sat curled up on the plush sofa, holding the gold card. "I doubt it's a scam. It's the biggest retail chain in the country; they wouldn't stoop to conning people like this. And I don't need bodyguards. It's much safer here than abroad."
Her third brother ran underground operations overseas. His bodyguards were hardened mercenaries used to real blood and bullets. She definitely wouldn't need them here.
"Still, be careful. How long are you planning to stay? If it's more than three months, I'm flying back right now. We can't help but worry when you aren't right in front of us."
Emma felt a warm rush of affection at his words. "No need to go through all that trouble, Julian. Once I sort out my family business, I'll head right back."
Mentioning her family caused that warm feeling to quickly run cold.
A stranger in a strange land. For six years, she had worked herself to the bone building connections overseas for the Lockwoods, only to be treated like a total joke in the end.
Even if she was going to leave, she refused to walk away looking like a beaten dog.
She had to uncover the truth. Even if it turned out exactly as the Lockwoods claimed, she would accept it.
"Julian, I have to go. I have a dinner date, so I need to shower and get ready."
Unwilling to wallow in self-pity any longer, Emma hung up, washed away the dust from unpacking, and applied a flawless layer of makeup before heading out.
Although she wasn't exceptionally tall, standing at five-foot-six with long limbs made her look stunning in whatever she wore.
She pulled out a hand-embroidered white dress Percy had gifted her, then tried on a pair of unopened heels, looking pleasantly surprised.
