Emma raised a hand, and Chase appeared with a group of bodyguards, blocking Logan and Gillian's path.
She had to make it clear that there were levels to marrying into wealth. She was a Harrington daughter-in-law, not someone to be summoned and dismissed at their whim.
Logan and Gillian could only watch as Carter wheeled her away.
Once the bodyguards dispersed, Gillian stomped her foot in rage.
"Emma just wants to ruin my life! Percy and I were already talking about marriage, and we even set a date for the engagement party. She did this on purpose!"
Logan looked at his sister with heartache but couldn't help saying, "Maybe it has nothing to do with her. We still need to talk to Percy about this."
"How could it have nothing to do with her? The very day she came back to the city, she met up with Percy alone. And that same night, I got dumped! She must have turned him against me!"
Gillian was losing her mind with anger. Suddenly realizing Logan was defending Emma, she glared at him darkly. "Logan, why are you taking Emma's side now? I'm the one getting dumped!"
"I'm not taking her side." Logan pursed his lips and explained, "If Percy wants to cancel the engagement, he still has to get approval from his parents and Uncle Raymond. He can't just call it off because he wants to. Let's head to the Harrington manor first."
Later that afternoon, Emma did end up going to the Harrington manor with Carter.
After all, Carter's mother had personally called to express her concern, so Emma agreed.
Percy's parents glared at Emma as if she were their sworn enemy.
Their son had been on the verge of getting engaged to Gillian. With Uncle Raymond's backing in the family, the third branch stood to gain a lot more leverage. Yet, right at this crucial moment, Percy wanted to break off the engagement.
"If you ask me, a woman should know her place and keep her dignity. You shouldn't act like those sketchy women out on the streets, dragging out affairs with other people's boyfriends when you're already married."
The aunt from the third branch fired the first shot, her tone dripping with passive-aggressiveness.
The elder Mrs. Harrington wasn't a fan of this arrogant granddaughter-in-law either, so she chimed in, looking directly at Emma. "I heard you had a private meal with your husband's cousin? As the eldest grandson's wife of the Harrington family, you need to be mindful of your own reputation and the family's face."
