Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 161

As Percy's words hung in the air, the room's reactions varied.

Carter was caught off guard. So she had rushed to see him that day merely because of the kidnapping?

Emma looked like she wanted to slap some sense into Percy. Was he an idiot?

If she had wanted to bring this up, couldn't she speak for herself?

She quickly glanced at Uncle Raymond and Pamela, but neither of their faces betrayed any unusual emotion.

"I wonder who could be so cruel as to kidnap you right off the street—it's absolute lawlessness."

Pamela wore a gentle mask of lingering fear, looking incredibly concerned for Emma.

Emma lowered her gaze with a soft chuckle. "I thought it was quite bold myself. But Julian is looking into it, and it won't be long before we uncover the truth."

"Percy, why do you even care that Emma was in a car accident?"

Gillian demanded furiously. She was seething with jealousy that Pamela was treating Emma so well; that was the mother who had raised her, and she refused to let Emma steal her away.

Absolutely not. So, she directed all her misplaced rage at Percy.

Raymond also found it inappropriate. "Indeed. Your cousin's wife will be looked after by Carter. Why are you interfering?"

Percy clenched his fists and violently shoved Gillian away.

"She is my gi—"

"Percy."

Carter's icy tone snapped him back to reality, leaving Percy suddenly drenched in a cold sweat.

"Do you have too much free time at work lately?"

Carter shot him a freezing glare, instantly deflating Percy's built-up courage until he shook his head like a coward.

"Mom said there was a family dinner today, which is why I brought Emma back. Otherwise, she'd be resting at home right now."

Carter's statement silenced the entire room. Until the meal concluded, no one dared to bring up Percy and Gillian's engagement again.

However, just as dinner wrapped up, Carter was called away again.

"I'll have Jeff take you back first."

"You're worried Gillian will be laughed at for a broken engagement, but what about me? Did I deserve to be played for a fool by both our families at my own engagement party?"

Emma shoved the medicinal oil back into Violet's hands, glaring at her demandingly.

For six whole years, they had countless opportunities to tell her the truth, yet they chose the most humiliating way possible to expose it.

Who had considered her dignity back then?

"No, it's not like—"

Violet looked at Emma with deep guilt. In hindsight, even she had to admit that Gillian's behavior at the engagement party had been far too willful.

"Ms. Jennings, the seventeen years you spent raising me were fully repaid the moment I forgave Charles and let him out of custody. They were repaid when I didn't press charges against Tristan for illegally kidnapping me and dumping me on a mountain, and when I turned a blind eye to Gillian's endless provocations."

After delivering her piece, Emma pulled a bank card from her bag.

"Please remember that I am no longer a daughter of the Lockwood family. If you feel my repayments still aren't enough, name your price."

"I have plenty of money."
