Violet didn't take the card. She simply stared at Emma with red eyes, her heart aching overwhelmingly.
Emma had spoken about cutting ties with the Lockwoods many times before.
But this time, Violet could truly feel that Emma was genuinely disgusted by the Lockwood family, disgusted by them.
While the Harringtons were still discussing the marriage between the two families, Pamela privately sought out Emma.
"The Jennings' medicinal oil is practically a miracle cure. No matter how angry you are with them, you shouldn't neglect your own body."
Holding the small bottle of medicinal oil, Pamela crouched gracefully in front of Emma, gently lifting her ankle.
"It's swollen so badly. It must hurt tremendously, right?"
Completely disregarding her high status as Lady Harrington, Pamela rested Emma's foot on her own lap. She poured some of the medicinal oil into her palm, warmed it up, and began massaging it into the sprained ankle.
"Pamela, I couldn't possibly trouble you to do this yourself. Let me do it."
Emma hurriedly tried to stop her, but Pamela offered a soft smile. "It's nothing. You married Carter, which makes you a junior in our family. Your uncle and I don't have children of our own, so we look at you kids as if you were ours."
She gestured for Emma to sit back and added, "You have other injuries too. Stop moving around and just listen to me."
Pamela was incredibly gentle, her voice as soothing as a warm spring breeze.
Emma lowered her head and smiled. "Thank you, Pamela. It's just hard to imagine that someone as elegant and kind as you could be Gillian's adoptive mother."
She couldn't hide the sarcasm and disbelief in her tone.
Pamela maintained her amicable smile. "Gillian is actually a good girl, but our lives used to be incredibly harsh."
"The Lockwood family said the same thing, but I just don't understand how harsh her life could have been to breed such deep malice toward me."
Emma played along. A bad environment could produce a good person, but if the original document was flawless, the copy wouldn't have glaring errors. She genuinely didn't believe a truly kind person could raise a daughter like Gillian.
"I was married once before. That man had a terrible temper and was always hitting me at home. After I brought Gillian in from the streets, he used it as an excuse to unleash his frustrations on me, beating and scolding me over the slightest annoyance."
