Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 18

Carter walked up beside Emma and casually handed her a premium-looking shopping bag.

Emma recognized the brand instantly. The empty bag alone could easily sell for several hundred dollars.

"I passed by and thought this bag would suit you perfectly. You're treating me to dinner, so it wouldn't be right for me to show up empty-handed."

Emma gracefully lifted the bag to examine it, and Carter added, "Let's head inside. It's windy out here."

She nodded, casting a fleeting glance at Gillian before walking in.

Gillian was genuinely startled by that look. Even though it was calm and even carried a hint of a smile, it made her heart tremble violently.

Furthermore, this was the third time Carter had openly sided with Emma.

If the first two times were mere coincidences, this time Carter was blatantly declaring his protection over her.

"Carter," Gillian called out, trying to sound brave.

The domestic medical market was full of untapped potential. The Harringtons needed the Lockwoods, so surely Carter would give her some face.

Carter's expression darkened. Ignoring her entirely, he positioned himself half a step behind Emma, making it abundantly clear he was escorting her into the restaurant.

"We only need one guest with the surname Lockwood in the restaurant today."

Carter shot a cold look at the restaurant manager, who had just rushed out. The implication was crystal clear.

Gillian's face turned downright ugly. Carter was effectively kicking her out.

"Emma! Do you even dare admit your surname is Lockwood?" she shrieked, furious and utterly humiliated.

Emma turned around, her tone thick with meaning. "Why wouldn't I? My surname is Lockwood. At least, it still is on my legal documents. If you hate it that much, make me change it. I looked into the name-change procedures here, though. If you want me to drop the surname, you'll have to provide legal proof that I share no blood ties with the Lockwood family."

This meant that if they wanted her to change her name, a DNA test was absolutely mandatory.

This realization also sparked an idea in Emma's mind.

If she wanted to find out if she was truly a Lockwood daughter, she could also track down the woman who had allegedly swapped her own child with the heiress and get a test done with her.

"So that's your angle," Gillian sneered.

Emma clearly hadn't given up on the Lockwood family or the shares in her possession.
