As Raymond and Pamela approached, they caught Emma's shockingly suggestive words loud and clear.
"Emma, Carter... what brings you two here?" Pamela asked, feigning total ignorance.
Emma ducked her head, radiating pure embarrassment. "We're here for a checkup."
"Do you two not want a baby?" Pamela abandoned her act entirely, grabbing Emma's hand with wide-eyed surprise and pulling her to the side. "If you were expecting right now, it would be an absolute blessing for you and the Harrington family."
Emma's cheeks flushed a delicate pink. "But I took so many heavy medications for my injuries recently. The risks would just be too high."
"That's very true," Pamela said, her tone steeped in deep regret. "If that's the case, then I sincerely hope you aren't pregnant. Otherwise, it would just be pure torture for your body."
Pamela's concern felt so profoundly genuine that Emma merely nodded along, though the gnawing suspicions in her heart only multiplied.
Her regret and affection didn't seem staged at all. Was the baby-swapping incident truly nothing more than a horrifying coincidence?
Emma began to heavily doubt her own theories, yet a relentless instinct deep in her bones screamed that there were simply no such things as coincidences in this world.
"Pamela, what brings you two here?"
Emma asked softly, and Pamela let out a long, weary sigh.
"Between Carter and Raymond... Raymond isn't purposefully trying to drive Carter out. He's just incredibly stubborn and values the dynasty above all else. Because of the friction between Percy and Carter, he naturally harbors some resentment toward you. Please don't take his anger to heart."
After offering her gentle reassurance, Pamela finally explained, "The company's affairs are simply too overwhelming. Raymond has been disconnected from the main group's operations for far too long, and it's taking a massive toll on him. He's too proud to swallow his pride and ask the younger generation for help, so it took me hours of begging just to convince him to come here for a checkup."
Emma offered a polite smile. "Raymond truly is incredible. We only just arrived at the hospital, and here you two are as well."
A fleeting flicker of something unreadable flashed through Pamela's eyes before she quickly laughed it off. "We're actually just here for a routine checkup on Raymond's legs. Years ago, the doctors mentioned a slim chance he might walk again, so we've been visiting regularly ever since."
"Has Raymond always been treated at this hospital?"
Emma tossed the question out casually, and Pamela replied with an equally nonchalant expression. "Yes. After all, Garrison is home to the Jennings family's medical empire. The medical equipment and the sheer caliber of the doctors here are legendary for miles around. He's been exclusively monitored at this facility for the past six years."
"But it wouldn't hurt to ask him privately. What if there really is a chance?"
Emma agreed politely, violently shoving the mounting suspicions back into the darkest corners of her mind.
Perhaps Pamela and Raymond showing up at this exact hospital really was just a stroke of fate.
By this time, Carter seemed to have finished his conversation with Raymond.
"Raymond, I'm taking Emma inside for her checkup. And I sincerely hope that you'll accept her for who she is, rather than basing your approval on whether or not she's carrying a child."
Both men wore expressions carved from stone, clearly having reached no sort of agreement.
Carter strode back to Emma's side, wrapping an arm protectively around her waist as if the lie were absolute truth, and spoke with deadly seriousness.
"Emma is beyond exceptional. Even if you completely reject her, Raymond, she is entirely worthy of me. In fact, she is the only woman alive who is."
