Carter and Emma headed straight for the OB-GYN department.

The attending physician was a woman in her forties with an exceptionally sour, mean-spirited face.

"Go do the tests first."

Without asking a single question, the doctor aggressively scribbled down a mountain of test slips. Emma pressed her lips together. "I'm perfectly healthy. I just want to check—"

"I said go do the tests on the slips! Are you deaf?" The doctor viciously cut her off before she could even finish her sentence.

Carter's brows snapped together in fury, preparing to tear the woman apart, but Emma stood up first.

"Director Marlow was so much better. Let's just wait until Director Marlow comes in before we get checked."

She spoke softly, yet pitched her voice just loud enough for the bitter doctor to hear. Instantly, the woman's face twisted in rage.

"You want to wait for her? She's been dead for ages."

Emma whipped around in total shock. The doctor, seemingly thrilled by Emma's horrified reaction, sneered with blatant triumph. "She's been rotting for years. How long has it been since you last visited this hospital? You didn't even know that?"

"I used to bring my mother here... She was perfectly healthy... How could she just die?"

Emma plastered on a look of absolute disbelief, furrowing her brows defensively. "Are you just jealous of Director Marlow and making up sick lies about her?"

"Jealous of her? Not only is she dead, she was raped and murdered! Tsk, tsk. For someone like her to end up like that isn't surprising in the least."

The doctor's tone dripped with venomous contempt. Emma feigned fierce outrage. "Director Marlow was an incredible doctor! How dare you speak of her like that? Believe me, I will file a formal complaint against you!"

"You think I'm scared of a complaint? Incredible doctor? She didn't even hold a medical license! She was just a lowly nurse. If she hadn't been so 'close' with Dr. Gregory Abbott, do you really think she'd ever have become the director of our department?"

Emma's eyes blew wide open, mirroring perfect, utter disbelief.

"Doctor." Carter stepped forward abruptly and dropped a thick, bulging envelope right onto the desk. "Is everything you just said the absolute truth?"

The doctor instantly eyed Carter with heavy suspicion. "Why do you care?"

"My mother-in-law was exclusively treated by Director Marlow. If you're telling me she was nothing more than an unqualified nurse, then this directly impacts the health and safety of both my mother-in-law and my wife."

Carter spun around and shot Emma a scolding glare. "I warned you before. I told you to look into the backgrounds of these so-called directors. A little money could have dug up the truth, but you were too lazy to check. And now look at this absolute mess."
