On the drive back, Emma Lockwood remained quiet, lost in her own thoughts.
Carter Harrington shifted restlessly in his seat. Was she going to use this opportunity to go with the flow and just divorce him?
Raymond had found the perfect excuse this time, but it was also a golden ticket for Emma.
"Do you want to use Raymond's pressure to force the Lockwood family into doing another DNA test?" he asked.
Emma looked over at him. "What did that report back there say?"
"Confirmed biological relationship."
Jeff had checked the papers when he picked them up. It definitively stated they were blood relatives.
"If you don't trust it, we can find a more prestigious testing center, or we can monitor the entire process," Carter offered.
Emma shook her head. "I suspected the one I saw might be fake, but if that were the case, the mastermind wouldn't have needed to hurt Violet. It would be entirely pointless.
"From a genetic standpoint, with my medical expertise, there's a very high probability that I am indeed a Lockwood. However, the woman who showed up today really does match the profile of the person who stole Gillian years ago."
Pamela's description had been accurate. Such a woman truly existed and had switched the babies back then.
But was it possible the switch never actually happened?
"Because of Pamela's description? Are you not suspicious of her anymore?" Carter frowned. If Emma trusted Aunt Pamela, then she only had one reason left to stay with the Harrington family.
To investigate his Uncle Raymond.
Emma didn't want to bluntly state that she was now more suspicious of Raymond, so she simply kept quiet.
Her silence only deepened Carter's misunderstanding.
Was she already considering the divorce?
"Carter, you—"
"I still think Pamela is highly suspicious," Carter quickly cut in, tossing his aunt under the bus.
For the sake of his own marriage, his aunt would just have to be sacrificed for now.
"Work was light today. When I came to find you, I happened to see Gillian Palmer bringing that woman inside. Judging by their expressions, I knew they were up to no good, so I contacted the power company in advance to cut the lights to the venue."
Carter finished his explanation with a subtle, smug raise of his eyebrows, as if asking her to praise his brilliance.
"And what about the surprise?"
Emma was purely curious, and Carter eagerly took the credit. "I threw together an impromptu light show."
Watching his boss completely absorb himself in showing off without overthinking Emma's words, Jeff silently sat back facing forward.
In the end, his blind affection had conquered his paranoia.
Just as Carter was waiting for a compliment, Emma's attention was stolen by a ringing phone.
It was a call from Timothy Morton.
"My overseas businesses got hacked. I need to leave the country for a while. I had to give you a heads-up. The person who did this is domestic, but they targeted my foreign assets."
"I strongly suspect this is aimed at you. They're trying to take out your allies here one by one."
