Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 266

Inside the hospital room.

Carter had an IV drip in his arm. His complexion looked awful, prompting Douglas to let out a heavy sigh of resignation.

"Carter, you... sigh."

Carter turned his head, looking at his grandfather.

Jeff had just texted him. He had intended to use the company's business to stall Emma from interacting with Travis, but she had ruthlessly turned him down.

She had replied:

"It's inappropriate for me to get involved in Harrington corporate affairs. Find someone else."

When he read those words, his heart turned to pure ice.

Emma was truly planning to draw a hard line between them.

"If everyone wants me to get divorced, then I... I won't fight it anymore," Carter murmured.

He lowered his eyes, suddenly loathing his own incompetence.

He hated that he was born into the Harrington family, hated that he owed his Uncle Raymond a lifetime of career prospects, and hated that he lacked the simple power to stand proudly by Emma's side.

Compared to Emma, he felt utterly useless.

During the time he had been faking his coma, Carter had done a lot of thinking.

Did a man like him really need to resort to such underhanded tactics to keep such a radiant woman?

Compared to him, Travis was indeed a much better match for her.

Carter, who had lived with unwavering pride for twenty-seven years, now felt a bottomless pit of insecurity whenever he faced Emma.

"Just sign it."

Raymond wheeled himself over to the bed with a stony expression, shoving the divorce papers toward him.

Carter took them. He had still broken his promise. He had failed Emma.

His knuckles turned white as thick veins bulged on the back of his hand. Staring at the word "Divorce," a genuine surge of suffocating despair rushed through him, and a spray of fresh blood splattered across the crisp pages.

"If you want to argue, take it outside. I need to examine the patient."

Julian could tell Carter wasn't faking it this time. He hadn't expected his devotion to his junior to run this deep.

After a moment of thought, he addressed Carter.

"There's no rush to discuss the divorce. Even if the Harrington family demands it, you'll have to wait until my parents return from their vacation abroad. You two made your own decision to marry, and now the Harrington elders are forcing a divorce. But don't forget, my junior is not an orphan."

He finished, then turned to Douglas, his tone softening just a fraction.

"Mr. Harrington, I've already informed my parents. I'm sure they will be in touch with you shortly. How and when this divorce happens won't be decided by a single sheet of paper. Don't you agree?"

By bringing his parents into this, Julian was effectively putting the full weight of the Vance family on the table.

The Vance family was a pillar of the nation's elite, and Douglas couldn't afford to completely disregard them.

He let out a heavy sigh and stood up.

"Raymond, it's been a while since you've recuperated at the villa. Take your wife and go stay there for a bit."
