Logan summoned the medical staff. After a thorough check, they found nothing wrong.
"The patient has some level of consciousness. You might have said something just now that stimulated her."
Logan's spark of excitement was instantly extinguished. He darkened his gaze and looked at Emma.
Was it because of her?
"You should leave."
Logan issued the order to evict her. Emma cast a reluctant glance toward the bed.
"And don't bother coming back."
Emma left the hospital just as a light drizzle began to fall. While waiting for her driver, Julian's car pulled up right in front of her.
Julian stepped out and opened an umbrella. "You rushed straight here the moment you got back. Have you completely stopped caring about your own health?"
Emma was ushered into the car, still slightly dazed.
"I've been feeling pretty good lately."
Julian raised an eyebrow and tossed a pack of heat patches onto her lap.
"You don't even track your own cycle, and you went out and got dead drunk the day before. The fact that your stomach ulcers haven't flared up is a miracle and the only proof you've been taking decent care of yourself lately."
Mentioning getting drunk inevitably reminded Emma of what had happened that night.
She flushed and stammered a response. Julian offered an understanding smile.
"I told Carter you're staying at my place today. I had the kitchen make some chicken soup with dates. You can think about going back to live with him whenever the Harrington family finally gets their act together."
The whole forced divorce fiasco might be water under the bridge for Carter and Emma, but Julian had absolutely no intention of letting it slide so easily.
Raymond thought a single sentence from him was enough to make his precious junior sister bow her head in submission? Keep dreaming.
Emma, however, was preoccupied with her promise to the Lockwood family.
"I can't. I need to swing by his office first."
As soon as Emma spoke, she saw her senior brother's face predictably darken.
Julian spoiled her the most, but he was also the strictest.
When he didn't want her to do something, not even Jocelyn, Travis, or their mentor pleading on her behalf could change his mind.
And naturally, so did she.
She raised an eyebrow and replied smoothly, "Yeah, Julian is waiting downstairs."
Emma then turned back to Tyler. "Since you want to invite me to a cocktail party, why don't you go downstairs and ask Julian? The Harrington family might not control my schedule, but the Vance family certainly does."
"Ms. Lockwood really is something. Pretty face, tons of powerful backers. Born into the wrong family, but what a lucky life you lead."
Tyler continued to sneer indignantly. Emma cast a dismissive glance at Terrance.
Terrance's heart skipped a beat, and he forced an apologetic smile. "Emma, please don't lower yourself to his level. I'll make sure to teach this brat a proper lesson when we get home."
Emma raised her eyebrows slightly. Terrance grabbed his son. "Aren't you going to apologize?"
Tyler was treated like a prince at home; when had he ever suffered such humiliation?
He slapped his father's hand away, turned on his heel, and stalked off.
Terrance looked full of regret. Emma gave a nonchalant shrug, but Carter's eyes only grew darker.
"I need to reconsider my business with you, Terrance. After all, if you can't even discipline your own son, how can anyone trust you to manage a company?"
