Hearing that, Gillian reflexively snatched her hand back.
Emma's gaze darkened as she looked at her with a smirk. "With all these reporters here, if you continue to spread baseless rumors without a shred of proof, I'll be calling my lawyers. The defamation laws in this country are quite robust."
She pulled out her phone and made a quick call, her voice turning cold. "Come down here and clear these people out."
Moments later, a different squad in uniform appeared.
Unlike the regular security guards from earlier, these men looked incredibly dangerous, radiating a menacing aura.
"Boss, Mr. Harrington is waiting inside."
The VP gave her a quick heads-up. Emma nodded slightly and walked into her office.
Carter was seated comfortably on the guest sofa, casually holding a teacup.
"Did you enjoy the show? Cured your boredom?"
Emma plucked the half-empty cup from his hand and poured him a fresh serving.
Carter's lips curved upward. "Not bad at all. Definitely more entertaining than reviewing contracts."
He knew that on her own turf, Emma wouldn't let anyone walk all over her.
But he hadn't expected her to handle the situation quite so flawlessly.
She slapped them across the face in public, all while maintaining absolute grace under pressure.
But...
"If you were struggling so much back then, why didn't you tell Percy?"
Carter's eyes darkened. If she had just spoken up, and if Percy had done nothing, Carter himself would never have just stood by and watched.
Emma leaned casually against her desk, smiling as if it were nothing. "What does it matter? It's all in the past anyway."
Back then, she didn't know she wasn't a real Lockwood, nor did she know the family's entire world revolved around Gillian.
Her only thought had been to avoid burdening her parents and to prevent the Harringtons from looking down on the Lockwoods.
Who could have guessed that all her sacrifices were entirely one-sided?
Emma's words sent a sharp pang through Carter's chest. He pressed his lips together, taking a slow sip of his tea.
