Catching the sheer shock in her voice, Jabez raised an eyebrow. "I thought you'd complain it wasn't enough."
He kept his face perfectly neutral, but Yvette could still detect a faint hint of mockery in his tone.
She frowned but didn't take the bait.
There was no point in arguing with him. It was a complete waste of breath.
And soon enough, she discovered exactly why he was being so generous with the settlement.
There were three conditions outlined in the agreement.
The first condition: she was strictly forbidden from announcing their marriage to the public, and she could never disclose the timeline of their relationship.
Yvette understood this perfectly well.
To the public eye, Jabez and Willow were a couple. If people found out the truth and Yvette exposed the actual timeline of her marriage, Willow would forever be branded as a home-wrecker. Her reputation would be ruined, making it practically impossible for her to ever be accepted into the Shelby family.
As for Yvette, she hadn't wanted to publicize their marriage even when they were together. She certainly wouldn't do it after they divorced.
Clearly, Jabez still didn't entirely trust her. Or rather, he was making absolutely sure that Willow's pristine reputation wouldn't suffer a single blemish.
The second condition: she could not tell the Shelby family about the divorce, especially not his grandmother.
"Grandma has high blood pressure and is on medication, so I get why we can't tell her. But why can't the rest of the family know?"
Yvette pressed her lips together, her dark eyes flashing with obvious displeasure.
"Do you honestly think that if the others knew, they wouldn't tell her?" Jabez sat with his legs crossed, watching her with a leisurely gaze.
She fell silent, mulling it over. A minute later, she finally spoke. "Fine. I agree."
Given how rash and explosive Wynne and Simon could be, there was a very real chance they would let it slip by accident.
The third condition: Yvette had to unconditionally cooperate with Jabez whenever he needed her to put on a show and deceive his family.
That meant she would have to play the role of the deeply devoted, loving wife whenever the Shelbys were around.
"I can't accept the third condition," Yvette said, meeting his cold gaze head-on.
