"Thank you, Matthew."
"Don't ever say thank you to me again," Matthew said, putting on a stern face. "After all these years, you're the most important person to me."
"If Charlotte heard that, she'd be jealous," Yvette chuckled softly.
"Don't worry. When I'm with her, I tell her she's the most important."
Yvette laughed.
Seeing her smile made Matthew smile too.
Thursday, the Solstice Auctions Restoration Team One studio.
Matthew's phone rang with an unknown number.
Yvette happened to be walking in from the hallway. "Why aren't you answering?"
She walked over, caught a glimpse of the number, and her eyes turned icy.
"You know it?"
"Wynne." Yvette recalled the older woman telling her to quit her job. She had assumed it was just angry rambling because she blamed her for not taking better care of Jabez. She never thought Wynne would actually take action.
"Answer it."
Matthew answered the call and brought the phone closer to Yvette, keeping it between them.
"Hello, Mr. Sutton. This is Mrs. Shelby."
"Mrs. Shelby, what can I do for you?"
"It's about Yvette. I heard she runs errands over at the Azure Atelier. I'm a relative of hers. She has some things to take care of recently, so I'm calling to process her resignation on her behalf."
Wynne assumed that by dropping her title, Matthew would immediately comply.
Matthew and Yvette exchanged a look, both seeing the coldness in each other's eyes.
Yvette was so furious she almost laughed.
She wanted to get her fired, but was too afraid of anyone finding out they were mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Shelby, but our company policy requires all resignations to be processed in person."
On the other end of the line, Wynne looked stunned.
She had explicitly stated her identity as Mrs. Shelby. Matthew was just firing an errand girl. She couldn't believe he was refusing her over something so trivial.
