"Here is your birthday present," Yvette said, pulling a small box out of her purse.

It was the gift Jabez had prepared in advance. She had no idea what was inside, and she couldn't care less.

Wynne's dark expression softened a fraction. "That's more like it."

Simon pursed his lips before barking orders at Yvette as if she were a maid. "I want sweet and sour ribs, shrimp balls, saury fish, and meatballs."

"Mom, what do you want?" Simon turned to ask Wynne.

Wynne thought about it, rattled off a list of dishes, and finally added, "And make some chicken soup."

Truth be told, Yvette was an excellent cook, especially when it came to chicken soup.

It was her absolute favorite.

Thinking about it, she hadn't had it in two or three months. Just the thought of it made her mouth water.

"Hurry up," Wynne urged when Yvette didn't move. "Don't just stand there like a log, it's annoying."

Yvette called a maid over and relayed the requests to her.

"What is the meaning of this?" Wynne's face darkened as she glared angrily at Yvette.

"I just told the kitchen what you wanted. Was there anything else you wanted to add?"

"I told you to make it! Stop playing dumb!"

"Mom and I want the food you make. Go do it!" Simon jumped to his feet, furious.

"I'm not feeling well. I'm going upstairs to rest."

Just as Yvette turned toward the stairs, she heard the front door open.

Jabez was home.

"What's going on?" Jabez asked, noticing the tense atmosphere in the living room.

"Look at the wonderful wife you married! It's her mother-in-law's birthday, and she refuses to cook a few simple dishes. She's doing this on purpose to upset me! She's picking a fight!"

Wynne pointed a finger squarely at Yvette, shaking with anger.

"Exactly!" Simon hurried over to Jabez to add fuel to the fire. "Jabez, Mom just asked her to whip up some home-cooked food and she refused. She has zero respect for her."
