Ten minutes later.
Yvette flipped down the sun visor and looked in the mirror. Her eyes were bloodshot and puffy, and her hair was a mess.
She smoothed down her hair, adjusted her clothes, and finally started the engine.
When she arrived back at the hospital, she didn't go upstairs. Instead, she sat quietly on a bench near the entrance.
Pulling out her phone, she found Jabez's number and dialed it again.
"Hello?"
The man's voice carried a hint of surprise, clearly not expecting her to call back.
"Jabez, I know you have an invitation to the Moreau banquet. Can you take me with you?"
Her fingernails dug so hard into her palms they drew blood, but she felt no pain as she waited in deafening silence for his answer.
"In what capacity?" his voice came back, cold and heavy.
It was just three words, but they made Yvette's blood run cold.
As Mrs. Shelby?
They were already in the process of finalizing their paperwork at the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Willow was the woman he publicly paraded as his girlfriend. Of course he was going to take Willow to the banquet, using every opportunity to introduce her to high-society connections.
A long silence stretched between them.
Yvette finally hung up.
His refusal couldn't have been more obvious. She needed to take a hint.
She placed a gentle hand over her stomach.
*Baby, what is Mom supposed to do?*
*Your father won't even help me save your grandmother.*
In that moment, it finally hit her just how monumental of a mistake this marriage had been.
She regretted it.
Regretted ever meeting him.
Regretted marrying him.
Regretted not divorcing him sooner.
Pushing her emotions aside, she called Matthew. "Matthew, did you..."
"Yvette, I pulled some strings through my dad and got an invitation. Where are you? I'll bring it to you right now."
