After washing up, Yvette turned off the lights and lay in bed.
She stared into the dark night outside her window, sleep completely evading her.
It wasn't until the morning light broke over the horizon that sheer exhaustion pulled her under, and she fell into a deep sleep.
Morning arrived.
Out in the living room, Charlotte kept pressing her ear to Yvette's door, terrified that she might have had a breakdown or done something drastic.
At 10:00 AM, the bedroom door opened, and Yvette stepped out.
"I'm fine, Charlotte. You can go to work," Yvette said gently. She didn't have the energy to style her hair, leaving it cascading loosely over her shoulders.
The gown she wore was a simple one she already owned.
"I need to get to the Moreau banquet."
The event ran from 11:00 AM all the way until 10:00 PM.
While she knew the most important guests always arrived fashionably late, she couldn't afford to risk it.
What if Dr. Walder hated crowds and showed up early?
Her phone buzzed. It was a call from Matthew.
"Yvette, I just found out something crucial. Dr. Walder owns an ancestral painting. It's incredibly old and has suffered from weathering and severe cracking. He's actively looking for a restorer."
"Got it. Thank you so much, Matthew," Yvette said earnestly.
"My family didn't receive a formal invitation, so I can't go in with you."
"It's okay, I can handle this alone." Yvette's gaze hardened with determination.
She hung up.
"Call me if you need absolutely anything," Charlotte told her. "I'll be there in a heartbeat."
"I will."
Yvette drove herself to the historic Moreau estate. Because she was early, only a few guests had arrived.
The property featured magnificent ancient architecture. Rumor had it the city had once tried to buy it to turn into a public landmark, but the family had outright refused.
Yvette was in no mood to admire the scenery. She quickly slipped into the main hall and claimed a seat with a perfect vantage point of the room.
Time ticked by slowly as the banquet hall steadily filled with people.
Yet, there was no sign of Dr. Walder.
