Because of Jabez's brutal attitude the other day, Yvette's resentment naturally extended to Milton.

She had no intention of revealing her mother's critical condition to him.

Milton and Jabez were cut from the same cloth. Telling him wouldn't help her; it would just give them another reason to look down on her.

Milton couldn't understand the sudden chill in her demeanor. Because of his daughter, Nola, he thought they had developed a somewhat amicable dynamic.

"I'll be going now, then."

Yvette had zero patience for small talk and offered nothing more than a dismissive nod.

Meanwhile, Willow noticed his absence. "Where did you run off to, Milton?"

"Just bumped into an acquaintance and said hello," Milton replied, his expression unreadable.

Trent slung an arm around his neck and lowered his voice. "You were out of town on business recently, so you probably haven't heard. Jabez and Yvette are officially filing their divorce papers at the Civil Affairs Bureau."

"Seriously?" Milton asked, genuinely surprised.

"Dead serious. We even threw a divorce party to celebrate," Trent chattered on, completely misreading Milton's shock.

But Milton tuned him out. His mind kept drifting back to Yvette's face.

She had heavy dark circles under her eyes, and even with makeup on, the redness in them was painfully obvious.

Was asking about Dr. Walder just a cover story?

"I'm going to the restroom." Milton shoved Trent's arm off and walked away.

Finding a quiet, secluded corner upstairs, he pulled out his phone and found Yvette's number.

His thumb hovered over the screen, but he couldn't bring himself to press call.

What would he even say?

*Are you really divorcing Jabez?*

That would just be rubbing salt in the wound.

And checking on her well-being? He certainly didn't have the right to cross that line.

He shoved his phone back into his pocket and retraced his steps. Before he even got far, he spotted Jabez standing nearby.

"Want a smoke?" Milton pulled a cigarette out and offered it to him.
