Dr. Walder threw open his door and stormed out, furious. "Are you out of your mind?! Do you have any idea what would have happened if my driver hadn't hit the brakes in time?!"

Yvette collapsed onto the pavement, her legs giving out as a wave of delayed terror washed over her. She clutched her chest, trying to calm her racing heart.

"I know. But I had to."

Dr. Walder let out a heavy sigh, realizing she wasn't going to let him leave until she said her piece.

"Speak."

"My mother is dying. She has severe congenital heart disease. These are her medical records."

Yvette scrambled to grab her dropped purse, pulling out a thick stack of medical files.

"And what do you have to offer me?" he asked coolly, making no move to take the papers.

"You have an ancestral painting. I can restore it."

"Really?" He shot a highly skeptical look at the disheveled woman sitting on the ground.

"Do you have a picture of it on your phone? I can look at the damage right now and walk you through my exact restoration process."

Yvette planted her hands on the asphalt, trying to push herself up. Dr. Walder chivalrously offered her a hand.

"Thank you."

He pulled up a photo on his phone and handed it to her.

Yvette's brow furrowed in deep concentration. Two minutes later, she looked up. "I can fix this."

She proceeded to detail every flaw visible to the naked eye, explaining the intricate, step-by-step methodology required to repair it.

With every word she spoke, Dr. Walder's eyes widened in pleasant surprise. "Alright. I trust you."

They exchanged contact information, and Yvette forwarded him the time and location for the surgery.

They parted ways.

A sharp, cramping pain suddenly flared in Yvette's lower abdomen. She wrapped her arms around her stomach, stumbling to the curb to sit down and rest.

*You'll understand, won't you, baby?*

*I can't lose my mom.*

*And I refuse to lose you, either.*

*Once your grandmother makes it through surgery tomorrow, I promise I'll take care of myself so you can be brought safely into this world.*
