Charlotte glanced over at her, her heart aching with sympathy, while mentally cursing Jabez Shelby a thousand times over.

Kingsbrook General Hospital, 8:00 AM.
Lance frowned anxiously. "Yvette, is Dr. Walder really coming?"
"He promised me he would." Yvette nodded.
"Maybe he got held up with something?" Joanne offered gently. "Don't panic just yet. Let's wait a little longer."
The operating room doors banged open, and a doctor rushed out, his face grim. "Ms. Yeats, the patient's condition is deteriorating rapidly. She could code at any second. I need you to sign this critical condition notice immediately."
A terrifying chill shot down Yvette's spine. Joanne quickly grabbed her arm to steady her.
Joanne turned her panicked anger on the doctor. "You told us you could guarantee her safety for forty-eight hours! It hasn't even been that long. Why is she suddenly crashing?" Her voice cracked with terror.
Yvette forced herself to stand tall and took the clipboard from the doctor.
Her fingers shook so violently she couldn't stop them, no matter how hard she tried. Her signature came out jagged and unrecognizable.
"Ms. Yeats, Dr. Walder must be here to take over the surgery by noon at the absolute latest, or else..."
The doctor turned and rushed back into the OR.
Yvette felt like she had been struck by lightning.
It had barely been a day, yet it felt like she had been trapped in this nightmare for a century.
She just wanted her mother.
*No. Now is not the time to break down.*
She had to get ahold of Dr. Walder immediately. She furiously wiped away her tears.
"I'm calling him right now."
She dialed his number.
It rang until it went to voicemail. Yvette's face turned ashen.
She quickly typed out a text.
At 9:30 AM, her phone buzzed with his reply.
