The door swung open, and seeing Jabez standing outside, Rhonda abruptly stopped in her tracks.
She instantly plastered on a flattering smile. "Jabez, you're here! Why didn't you tell us you were coming?"
"I was passing by and thought I'd check on Mr. Huxley," Jabez said, stepping into the room.
Quentin tried to sit up but strained his bruised abdomen, wincing in pain.
"Willow will be right back."
Right as Rhonda said that, Willow walked in.
"Jabez? Didn't you say you were packed with meetings today? You made time?" Her voice fluttered with joy.
"I cleared my schedule."
Willow flushed with a shy, delicate smile. Jabez was so good to her—he actually canceled his meetings just to visit her father.
"Willow, I'll stay here and watch over him. You two go enjoy yourselves on a date."
"Okay." Willow sweetly linked her arm through Jabez's.
Her happiness lasted only two seconds before the image from the Shelby Group's group chat flashed in her mind, souring her mood.
Jabez had booked a highly romantic, candlelit dinner at an upscale restaurant.
They sat across from each other.
"Jabez, thank you so much for taking the time to visit my dad."
"It was nothing." He casually glanced at her bare collarbone and asked, seemingly without thought, "Where's your emerald pendant? Why aren't you wearing it?"
Panic flared in Willow's chest, but she quickly suppressed it.
She offered a bashful smile. "That pendant is proof of our first encounter, our romantic keepsake. It means too much to me. I'm terrified of damaging it, so I put it away safely."
From the very first time she met Yvette, Willow had fixated on the emerald pendant resting against her neck. She had always wanted it for herself.
On the day Quentin brought her and her mother into the Huxley family, Winifred had packed up and left with Yvette. After that, she never had the chance to see Yvette again, and her desire for the pendant faded into the background.
Then, one freezing, snowy day.
