"I understand," Yvette replied, her expression heavy with worry.
-
The early autumn morning carried a crisp chill.
Yvette woke up extra early, dressing down in plain long sleeves and pants to blend seamlessly into the crowd.
Before stepping out, she deliberately put on a face mask and sunglasses, doing everything she could to maintain a low profile.
She let out a breath of relief once she safely arrived at Solstice.
The gossip in the office was even louder today, but she simply pretended she couldn't hear it.
Yvette didn't step out of Solstice all day. Even for lunch, Matthew brought food back for her.
Finally, it was time to clock out.
Matthew walked up to her. "Work's over. I'll walk you to the parking garage."
Yvette knew he was worried, and frankly, she didn't dare walk alone either.
She wouldn't mind getting a few scrapes herself, but she was pregnant. Her condition was still precarious, and even a minor shock could trigger a miscarriage.
"Okay."
The two took the elevator down to the underground parking garage.
Matthew watched Yvette get into her car, only turning to his own vehicle once he saw her safely drive off.
Yvette had been on edge all day. She knew that as long as she made it home safely, the danger would pass.
She pulled into her residential complex, parked, locked the car, and took two steps away before realizing she forgot to put her face mask back on.
She turned around to head back to the car.
"Smack."
A putrid, rotten egg struck her squarely on the forehead. Disgusting, slimy liquid slid down her face, and an overwhelming, stomach-turning stench assaulted her nose.
"Gag."
Yvette couldn't stop herself from retching. She pinched her nose and snapped her head toward where the egg had come from.
A heavy-set man with ugly features was glaring at her with utter disgust and contempt.
An icy chill shot from her toes straight to her brain. She scrambled back into her car and slammed the locks shut.
