An invisible cloud of gunpowder seemed to fill the air.
The two men locked eyes, neither willing to back down an inch.
Just then, Yvette walked out in soft loungewear, fresh from the shower. "Matthew, who's at the..."
When she recognized the man standing in the doorway, the gentle warmth vanished from her face, instantly replaced by sheer indifference.
"What are you doing here?"
Jabez raised his hand and extended the black gift box toward her. "Your anniversary gift. Give it to me on the actual day."
Yvette took it, her eyes completely devoid of emotion. "It's just a box. You didn't need to make a trip all the way here yourself. A courier would have sufficed."
Jabez was far too intelligent to miss the underlying dismissal.
Predictably, his expression darkened. From the corner of his eye, he spotted two sets of plates and cutlery set on the dining table. A layer of frost settled over his features.
"Am I interrupting something?"
"Glad you realized."
"Well, Mr. Shelby, the package is delivered, so I won't be inviting you in for dinner," Matthew said, reaching out to push Jabez back.
Jabez shifted his weight smoothly, dodging the physical contact. His icy gaze flicked between Matthew and Yvette.
"Make sure certain rumors don't make their way back to Grandma."
"Understood," Yvette replied dismissively.
She grabbed Matthew by the arm and pulled him inside.
A second later, she slammed the door shut without a hint of hesitation.
Bang.
The heavy door sealed shut right in Jabez's face.
In the dining room.
Yvette and Matthew sat across from each other at the table.
The atmosphere had grown inexplicably heavy.
"I made all your favorites today. Try it and tell me if I've lost my touch."
Matthew served her a tender piece of braised meat, placing it carefully on her plate.
