"Okay."
The next morning, Yvette was jolted awake by her alarm.
She had suffered from insomnia the night before, tossing and turning endlessly. She hadn't managed to fall into a fitful sleep until the sky began to lighten.
After getting washed up, she walked into the living room but didn't see Crispin anywhere. Confused, she asked, "Winona, where's the Professor? I was going to call him for breakfast."
"Don't worry about it, Yvette. Your professor headed out first thing this morning." Winona wrapped a comforting arm around her shoulders.
"What about Matthew?"
"He already left for work."
Yvette offered a soft "Mhm" and sat down to eat in silence.
"Winona, you get those bad migraines all the time. Please take care of your health."
"I know, sweetheart." Winona's eyes instantly welled with tears. "You're going to be out there all by yourself, in an unfamiliar place. If you run into any trouble, you call me immediately. Don't you dare try to shoulder everything on your own."
Yvette nodded vigorously, immediately turning toward the door so Winona wouldn't see the tears pooling in her own eyes.
Winona's fretful, motherly instructions trailed after her as she walked.
"Winona, Charlotte is taking me to the airport. Go back inside."
Winona wiped at her tears, watching the young woman's retreating back with deep reluctance.
Yvette rolled her suitcase downstairs, and the moment the elevator doors chimed open—
"Surprise!" Charlotte practically yelled.
"Very surprising," Yvette replied with a soft, accommodating smile.
Charlotte grabbed her luggage, and the two of them hopped into the car.
While stopped at a red light, Charlotte couldn't help but steal glances at Yvette. The dark, bruised circles under her eyes made it painfully obvious she hadn't slept a wink.
The atmosphere inside the car was heavy.
"Charlotte, once I'm gone, I need you to check in on the Yeats family whenever you can. If anything happens, tell me immediately."
