"Repeat what you just said!"
"Mother, Jabez finally has a day off. Let him get some rest..." Wynne desperately signaled her son with her eyes to keep quiet.
Unfortunately, he acted as if he didn't see her at all.
"Keep your mouth shut!" Sybil snapped harshly, her piercing gaze locking onto Jabez. "You. Speak."
"Grandma, you have high blood pressure. You can't get worked up like this." Jabez immediately stepped forward to guide her to the sofa.
"Don't try to change the subject. I'm not senile yet."
"Mother, weren't you at the hospital for your checkup? Why did you come back so suddenly?" Wynne asked cautiously, offering a tight, nervous smile.
"I forgot something."
Suppressing her boiling rage, Sybil whipped her head back to Jabez. "Did you really propose to Willow?"
"I did," Jabez answered, his spine ramrod straight.
"You absolute bastard! I'm going to beat you to death today!"
Sybil roared, surging to her feet. She raised her heavy wooden cane and swung it viciously across Jabez's back.
The cane struck with a heavy, sickening thud. Jabez let out a low grunt but didn't even try to dodge, simply taking the beating as Sybil cursed him out.
Wynne shrieked in panic. "Mother, stop hitting him! Jabez has a whole corporation to run! If you injure him, how is he supposed to work?!"
"It is a mother's failure when a son is uneducated! If you try to stop me, I'll beat you too!"
Sybil's eyes cut toward Wynne like daggers, freezing her in her tracks.
Wynne knew perfectly well that her mother-in-law would follow through on that threat, but maternal instinct took over, and she positioned herself in front of Jabez anyway.
Sybil leaned around her to deliver another blow, shouting, "You paraded your affairs around and Yvette endured it! Now you actually have the nerve to propose to that homewrecker?! Are you actively trying to put me in an early grave?!"
