Jabez's deep eyes shifted slightly. His fingers rhythmically flipped his metal lighter open and shut, his thin lips pressed into a hard line.
Charlotte helped Yvette into a chair in the waiting area.
"Charlotte, it's getting late. Go home for now. I'll stay with her tonight." Matthew noticed Charlotte constantly stifling yawns.
Charlotte hadn't slept well the night before and was running on fumes. She nodded reluctantly. "Call me if anything changes."
Matthew promised he would, and only then did she finally leave the hospital.
Despite Matthew's repeated attempts to persuade her, Yvette flat-out refused to go rest in a bed. With a helpless sigh, he sat down to keep her company.
The hours crawled by. Gradually, the first hints of dawn bled into the sky.
Exhausted beyond her physical limits, Yvette's head finally lolled to the side, coming to rest on Matthew's shoulder as she slipped into sleep.
Matthew carefully braced her head and scooped her up into his arms. Just as he was walking past Jabez...
The man suddenly spoke. "What exactly is going on between you two?"
Matthew paused, his tone frosting over. "Mr. Shelby, you're a notoriously sharp man. Can you really not figure it out?"
Without waiting for an answer, he carried Yvette down the hall.
Jabez stood rooted to the spot, his eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.
His phone buzzed in his pocket. He glanced at the caller ID, then ignored it until it went to voicemail.
The caller was persistent, ringing him several more times. After realizing they were being ignored, the calls finally stopped.
Early the next morning, a hospital janitor grumbled as he swept up a small mountain of cigarette butts from the floor.
"Who does this? Smoking in a hospital is bad enough, but treating the floor like an ashtray?"
