Wynne went in first. She scrubbed in, donning the mandatory ICU gown, shoe covers, hairnet, and mask.

Once inside, Wynne broke down, clutching Sybil's hand and pouring out memories of the past.

In hindsight, the older woman had been quite decent to her. As long as Wynne didn't create scandals for the family, Sybil largely stayed out of her business.

The only times they truly clashed were when Sybil stepped in to defend Yvette against Wynne's harshness.

"Mom, please, if you just wake up, I'll do whatever you want. Even if you demand Jabez and Yvette get remarried, I'll agree to it."

She choked out a stream of tearful promises, but Sybil remained completely unresponsive.

"Mom, you have to wake up. This family falls apart without you."

When her ten minutes were up, she wiped her eyes and stepped out of the unit.

Jabez was already scrubbed and suited up. He immediately walked in.

His brow was locked in a deep scowl, and his hands were shoved deep into his pockets, his fists clenched tight as his intense gaze locked onto the frail figure in the bed.

Earlier, Wynne had sat by the bedside at an angle, allowing the people outside to vaguely guess a word or two from her lips.

But Jabez stood with his broad back entirely facing the window. No one had a clue what he said to his grandmother.

When he emerged, he noticed Simon was missing. "Where's Simon?"

"He couldn't handle the guilt of facing her. He's hiding in the bathroom," Wynne muttered.

"You go next," Jabez told Yvette.

Yvette hesitated for a second. After all, Simon was actual family. "Shouldn't Simon go first?"

"Go. We're running out of time."

Yvette's fingers curled into her palms, fully aware he was talking about the seventy-two-hour survival window.

Without another word, she hurried to scrub in and entered the sterile room.

The second she stepped inside, the oppressive reality of the ICU hit her. It felt like a dull blade sawing at her chest, making it agonizing to draw a breath.
