Ignoring the Shelby family's reactions, Matthew guided Yvette gently toward the elevators.
"My mom made you some soup and your favorite shrimp. You need to eat a proper meal tonight."
"I will," Yvette replied softly.
Their exchange drifted down the quiet hallway, landing squarely in Jabez and Wynne's ears.
Furious, Wynne pointed a shaking finger at their retreating backs and rounded on Jabez.
"What exactly is going on between those two? Yvette was suddenly so eager to sign the divorce papers—was she cheating on you this whole time?"
Emerging from the bathroom, Simon caught the tail end of the scene as Yvette and Matthew stepped into the elevator.
Looking bewildered, he walked over to his brother. "Hey, didn't Yvette completely worship the ground you walked on? Why is she leaving with another guy?"
"No wonder there were rumors about them hooking up behind your back. Looks like they weren't just rumors, huh?"
He was mostly thinking out loud. Out of the ten times Yvette had come to the hospital, Matthew had been her chauffeur for at least half of them. It was an easy conclusion to jump to.
Wynne's expression soured even further. "And to think I actually wanted to write her a compensation check. Now I see she's been playing you for a fool this whole time."
Jabez's eyes lowered. The temperature in the corridor seemed to drop ten degrees, but he offered absolutely no response to their theories.
The next day at noon.
An ICU nurse stepped out into the hall and approached the Shelby family.
"How is she doing today?" Simon asked, bouncing nervously on his heels.
"The patient is fully lucid and alert," the nurse replied before looking at her clipboard. "Which one of you is Yvette? The patient is asking for her."
Instantly, the eyes of Jabez, Wynne, and Simon snapped to Yvette.
Jabez's dark, fathomless eyes betrayed absolutely nothing.
Wynne's gaze, however, was dripping with suspicion.
