"I'm fine," Sybil rasped, her voice thin but her eyes surprisingly sharp.

Yvette could feel the older woman analyzing her. She forced her posture to relax, trying desperately to hide her nervous energy.

"Yvette, I could hear you talking while I was under. I just couldn't force my eyes open." Sybil paused to gather her breath. "Right before you left... you said you were pregnant. Was that the truth?"

Yvette's spine instantly locked up. There was no avoiding this. Her mind raced for an escape route.

"Sybil, the only thing that matters right now is your recovery. Please don't stress over anything else. It's not good for your heart."

She dodged the direct question, trying to redirect the conversation.

Seeing her evasion, Sybil easily read between the lines.

Throughout her marriage, Yvette had sacrificed everything, even enduring the ultimate humiliation of Jabez parading her own half-sister around town as his girlfriend. While they flaunted their romance, Yvette had been forced to remain the invisible, unacknowledged wife.

Any woman would carry deep-seated resentment over that.

"Yvette, I'm old, but I'm not senile."

Sybil pressed on, "How long have you and Jabez been officially divorced?"

Yvette did the math and answered softly, "A month."

"But you were throwing up back at the old house long before that. You've been pregnant for a while, haven't you?"

She phrased it as a question, but her tone was absolute certainty.

"No," Yvette shook her head firmly. "I only got pregnant about a month before the divorce was finalized."

The cloudiness in the older woman's eyes seemed to clear, and a faint flush of color actually returned to her pale cheeks.

"How far along are you? Do you know if it's a boy or a girl?"

Before Yvette could even formulate an answer, Sybil let out a soft, joyful chuckle, murmuring half to herself, "It doesn't even matter. Boy or girl, it's a new generation for the Shelby family."

"Sybil, the baby isn't Jabez's."
