“Why don't you sit in on the judging panel with us tomorrow?” Charlotte suggested.
“The team already has a problem with me. Flaunting that kind of authority right now wouldn't be a smart move,” Yvette declined.

An hour before her shift ended, Yvette took time off and headed to the maternity clinic.
Her attending physician was Dr. Albright, a veteran OB/GYN with silver hair and a deeply compassionate demeanor. As an honorary director of the hospital with nearly fifty years of experience, she had technically retired two years ago but was brought back specifically to mentor the younger staff. Today, a small crowd of resident doctors trailed behind her, observing.
Inside the examination room, beneath the glaring surgical lights, Yvette lay in a hospital gown. Her hands rested protectively over her lower abdomen, her face calm as she stared at the ceiling, savoring what she believed to be her final connection with her baby.
Dr. Albright held the chart, studying the test results carefully before a deep frown creased her forehead.
“Is something wrong?” Yvette asked, a sudden spike of anxiety hitting her.
“Ms. Yeats, has your uterus suffered significant trauma in the past?”
Yvette froze.
Her mind flashed back to six years ago. She and Jabez had just started dating. The Shelby family was undergoing a brutal transition of power, and the corporate environment was absolute chaos.
Jabez’s ruthless, iron-fisted tactics in the boardroom had earned him a long list of enemies.
Everyone wanted to kick the Shelby family while they were distracted.
That winter, Kingsbrook was hit by a historic blizzard that raged for three days, piling snow over three feet high.
Her hands subconsciously tightened over her slightly swollen stomach, a chaotic storm of emotions tearing through her.
She had been so dead set on ending this pregnancy in the beginning. But somewhere along the line, she had unknowingly developed a profound, desperate attachment to the tiny life growing inside her.
“Given your medical history, I strongly advise you to take more time to think this through.”
Taking in Yvette’s devastated expression, Dr. Albright sighed softly. “I see this all the time. Young women rush into an abortion because the timing isn't right, only to spend years agonizing and undergoing grueling treatments when they finally want a baby but can't conceive.”
“Since you are still early in the first trimester, I can give you a maximum of two weeks to delay the procedure.”
“Use this half-month to really decide if you want to keep this child.”
“Ms. Yeats, please think about this carefully. There are some decisions in life that simply cannot be undone.”
