Hearing the commotion, Jabez's expression hardened instantly. Without a second thought, he violently ripped his arm out of Yvette's grasp.
"We'll talk later," he snapped coldly.
Caught off guard by the sheer force of his movement, and already unsteady in her heels, Yvette lost her balance and pitched forward.
Panic seized her. She squeezed her eyes shut and instinctively wrapped both arms protectively around her stomach.
A strong hand clamped down on her arm, hauling her upright just before she hit the floor.
She snapped her eyes open and turned. It was Milton Graham.
Still reeling from the near-fall, Yvette let out a shaky breath. "Thank—"
"You really need to watch your step, Ms. Yeats," Milton interrupted, his voice dripping with icy sarcasm. "If you're going to put on a pathetic act, you should at least make sure someone actually cares to watch."
He had only caught her out of basic reflex; it didn't mean his opinion of her had changed in the slightest.
"If there's something wrong with your brain, Mr. Graham, go see a doctor. And maybe get your eyes checked while you're at it," Yvette retorted coldly, yanking her arm away and turning on her heel.
She had told them time and time again that she wanted a divorce, but Jabez and Milton acted completely deaf to it.
They were convinced everything she did was just some manipulative scheme.
Standing at the end of the hall, Flint Quinn had watched the entire exchange.
From his perspective, Yvette had intentionally ambushed Jabez when he was alone.
When he tried to leave, she had shamelessly grabbed him. Everyone knew Jabez and Willow were publicly dating; there was no way Yvette didn't know.
And when her little seduction routine failed, she conveniently threw herself into Milton's arms.
What a calculating, manipulative woman!
Flint mentally cursed himself for ever being intrigued by her. Any trace of admiration he'd felt instantly curdled into disgust.
Yvette walked back to the ballroom and practically ran into Matthew, who was looking for her.
"Where have you been? I was just about to go looking for you," Matthew said, breathing a sigh of relief.
"I'm fine. I just had a quick word with Jabez," Yvette lied softly, exhaustion heavy in her eyes.
From where they stood, they had a clear view of Jabez.
"Yvette, are you okay?" Matthew asked, his forehead creasing with concern.
Yvette slowly shook her head.
From the day she said 'I do,' she had known Jabez didn't love her.
It was her own foolish, unrealistic fantasy that made her believe her unconditional love could eventually thaw his heart.
Now, reality had slapped her across the face.
The way he treated her family versus how he treated Willow's was worlds apart.
She could no longer turn a blind eye to it.
Starting today, she was going to rip him out of her heart, roots and all.
Even if the process tore her soul apart, she would never let him occupy a single inch of her mind again.
*Goodbye, Jabez.*
