They chatted for a few more minutes.
"I won't take up any more of your evening, Mr. Shelby, Ms. Huxley," Flint said politely.
Just as he turned around, he noticed Yvette staring in their direction.
Following her line of sight, he realized she was looking directly at Jabez.
She's soaking up Mr. Sutton's affection while actively trying to sink her hooks into someone with even more power and money.
Any lingering trace of admiration Flint had for Yvette was instantly swallowed by disdain.
Meanwhile, Yvette was desperately searching for a window to get Jabez alone so they could finally talk.
Willow also noticed Yvette staring, and a spike of irritation flared in her chest.
Milton studied Yvette for a moment and noticed something unusual. "She isn't drinking tonight, and she's wearing block heels. Doesn't she usually wear stilettos to these corporate events?"
His observation caught Jabez's attention. His dark, fathomless eyes locked onto Yvette.
She was holding a glass of juice, and the sky-high heels she typically wore to his side at business functions had been replaced by much more sensible, sturdy shoes.
Yvette's gaze drifted back to Jabez's corner.
Their eyes met.
Yvette could instantly feel the heavy, probing weight of his scrutiny. He was analyzing her.
Her chest tightened in panic, but she kept her face completely neutral.
Seeing Jabez's lingering attention on Yvette, alarm bells practically deafened Willow.
This was the very first time Jabez had ever been distracted by Yvette.
"Jabez, I'm feeling a little hungry. Let's go get something to eat," Willow said softly, wrapping her arms securely around his.
"Alright," Jabez agreed, pulling his gaze away and escorting her toward the buffet.
Half an hour later.
"Are you not drinking tonight?" Jabez's suspicious gaze dropped to her pale face.
A bitter, mocking smile tugged at Yvette's lips. "Does it matter to you, Mr. Shelby?"
Fearing he might look closer, she quickly added, "I'm on medication. I can't mix it with alcohol."
Jabez said nothing. His dark eyes lingered on her for a few more seconds, searching for a crack in her composure. Finding nothing glaringly obvious, he turned to walk back toward the ballroom.
Remembering the divorce papers, Yvette reached out and grabbed his wrist.
Jabez turned back, his gaze dropping to where her fingers gripped his sleeve.
Yvette held on tight, terrified he would walk away again. "I have the divorce—"
"Ms. Huxley! Are you alright? I'm so sorry—!"
A frantic apology echoed from the hall.
