Noah’s voice remained gentle and polite, as though the life–and–death scare moments earlier had been nothing more than a minor inconvenience. His calm demeanor left Teresa at a loss for words.

After a long pause, she shook her head and gently touched Noah’s ice–cold cheek. “Sweetheart, once you pull through this, everything will get better. It’s not just Xavier looking for a treatment–your grandfather is doing everything he can, too.”

As Teresa spoke, Xavier shot her a cold glance, an expression Isabella didn’t miss.

Truthfully, Isabella couldn’t tell whether Teresa genuinely cared for Noah, but she knew for a fact that Stanley had given up on him long ago.

She had overheard Stanley pressuring Xavier herself, telling him to know when to cut his losses and make a decision about Noah’s

care.

Even after all this time ill, Noah still held control over the assets his father, Tanner, had left him. If Noah were gone, those holdings would revert to Stanley. In the eyes of the Moore family, Noah had been considered a lost cause for quite a while.

Seeing that Teresa wasn’t going to push further about Noah’s injury, Linda finally relaxed, though she couldn’t understand why Noah would cover for her…

The young nurse’s caregiver also assumed it had been a false alarm, but she kept her distance from Linda, her expression tight.

If Linda hadn’t so quickly thrown her under the bus earlier, she might have still believed her to be a kind, sisterly figure. What she couldn’t wrap her head around was why–when no one had actually done anything wrong–Linda had been so eager to pin the blame entirely on her. The more she thought about it, the more hurt and confused she felt.

“The instrument.” Xavier’s cool voice cut through the tension once more.

Noah stilled, and Xavier’s gaze turned piercing. “Even if you harmed yourself, you would have needed something to do it with.”

Linda broke into another cold sweat, pressing her lips together nervously, her eyes fixed on Noah.

Noah glanced briefly in her direction, then let his gaze drift toward the nightstand. “It’s in the drawer.”

At that, Harry promptly pulled open the drawer and rummaged inside. Tucked into the back corner was a small paring knife.

Harry handed it to Xavier, but Xavier didn’t take it. Instead, his eyes grew even sharper as they settled on Noah.

The blade showed no signs of use… Did his brother really think he was that gullible?

Noting Xavier’s lingering suspicion, Teresa also sensed something wasn’t adding up. “Dr. Ashford, I was told Noah’s daily medication has a sedative effect… According to Linda, Isabella arrived when Noah was already asleep?”

If Noah had been asleep, how could he have possibly injured himself?

“It does have sedative properties,” Harry agreed automatically, then caught the implication of her question..

The caregiver nodded eagerly. “Exactly! I remember when Linda and I cleared the room earlier, Mr. Noah Moore was already resting…”

Isabella stayed quiet, allowing the questions to circle back to Noah. Only she knew he hadn’t been fully under the medication’s influence–he’d only been pretending to be asleep.

Besides herself, only Linda and the young caregiver had been in a position to harm him. The caregiver was easily ruled out, which left Linda as the only possibility.

Noah taking the blame could only mean one thing: he was protecting Linda.

“I was still awake at the time,” Noah said without hesitation, his eyes finding Isabella’s. “Ms. Carter can confirm it. We even spoke for a little while.”

All eyes shifted back to Isabella–especially Xavier’s. She could feel his gaze drilling into her, intense and penetrating, as if trying to see straight through her.

“You spoke with him?” Xavier murmured near her ear, his tone thick with disbelief.
