He had noticed Isabella heading toward the pantry earlier and grew curious when she didn’t return. After a few minutes, he decided to follow her–only to walk straight into a heated

scene.

A flicker of surprise passed over Isabella’s expression, but before she could speak, the two female employees rushed toward Xavier as if he were their lifeline.

“Mr. Moore! Isabella attacked us out of nowhere–she even threatened to fire us and threw our badges on the floor!” The taller woman’s face was flushed with indignation as she spoke.

Her colleague quickly chimed in, layering her tone with wounded sincerity. “Mr. Moore, it was just a small misunderstanding with the new intern. We apologized as soon as Isabella stepped in, but she refused to let it go…”

“That’s not what happened!” The intern hiding behind Isabella finally spoke up, her cheeks flushed with anxiety. “Mr. Moore, this was all my fault. Ms. Carter was only trying to help. Please, let me explain—”

“It’s all right.” Isabella gently took the girl’s hand, offering a reassuring squeeze before she turned to face Xavier.

Though his presence filled the space with an undeniable authority, Isabella remained composed. She wasn’t the same nervous junior employee she’d once been–the one who used to feel uneasy around Xavier even when she’d done nothing wrong.

“Xavier, you can review the security footage if you’d like. They violated company policy, so I handled it on your behalf.”

“Mr. Moore, we-” the taller woman tried again, but Xavier’s eyes stayed fixed on Isabella as he cut her off.

“That won’t be necessary. I’m already aware of what took place.”

Hearing that, the two women fell silent, exchanging subtle, smug looks.

Xavier had always put the company’s interests first. No matter how close he and Isabella might be, he would never dismiss two long–term employees over something so personal–not without solid cause. Besides, he’d just praised their department’s performance earlier that week.

“You haven’t changed,” Xavier said to Isabella, his voice lower now, yet carrying a warmth that felt almost intimate. “Still too lenient with people.”
