He had noticed Isabella heading toward the pantry earlier and grew curious when she didn’t return. After a few minutes, he decided to follow her–only to walk straight into a heated
scene.
A flicker of surprise passed over Isabella’s expression, but before she could speak, the two female employees rushed toward Xavier as if he were their lifeline.
“Mr. Moore! Isabella attacked us out of nowhere–she even threatened to fire us and threw our badges on the floor!” The taller woman’s face was flushed with indignation as she spoke.
Her colleague quickly chimed in, layering her tone with wounded sincerity. “Mr. Moore, it was just a small misunderstanding with the new intern. We apologized as soon as Isabella stepped in, but she refused to let it go…”
“That’s not what happened!” The intern hiding behind Isabella finally spoke up, her cheeks flushed with anxiety. “Mr. Moore, this was all my fault. Ms. Carter was only trying to help. Please, let me explain—”
“It’s all right.” Isabella gently took the girl’s hand, offering a reassuring squeeze before she turned to face Xavier.
Though his presence filled the space with an undeniable authority, Isabella remained composed. She wasn’t the same nervous junior employee she’d once been–the one who used to feel uneasy around Xavier even when she’d done nothing wrong.
“Xavier, you can review the security footage if you’d like. They violated company policy, so I handled it on your behalf.”
“Mr. Moore, we-” the taller woman tried again, but Xavier’s eyes stayed fixed on Isabella as he cut her off.
“That won’t be necessary. I’m already aware of what took place.”
Hearing that, the two women fell silent, exchanging subtle, smug looks.
Xavier had always put the company’s interests first. No matter how close he and Isabella might be, he would never dismiss two long–term employees over something so personal–not without solid cause. Besides, he’d just praised their department’s performance earlier that week.
“You haven’t changed,” Xavier said to Isabella, his voice lower now, yet carrying a warmth that felt almost intimate. “Still too lenient with people.”

The two employees froze, glancing at each other in confusion. Had they heard him correctly?
“Mr. Moore, I—” the taller one began, but Isabella spoke over her.
“Too lenient?” She tilted her head slightly. “What would you have done differently, Mr. Moore?”
“This department has needed restructuring for a while. Too many talented newcomers have been overlooked.” Xavier replied calmly, then shifted his gaze to the intern behind Isabella. “What’s your name?”
The girl looked nervously toward Isabella, who gave her an encouraging nod. “Amelia Davis. I’m an intern in marketing…”
“Consider your internship completed. You’re now a full–time employee. Would you transferring departments?”
Amelia stood speechless for a moment, then managed a quick, eager nod.

Xavier continued, “The executive office is short on assistants. Isabella will oversee your training from now on. As for the marketing department–we’ll be making some organizational changes.”
“Yes, Mr. Moore.” Amelia’s voice was barely above a whisper, her eyes shining with disbelief and excitement.
The two women were stunned. Not only was Xavier backing Isabella’s decision, but he was also restructuring their entire team? By any reasonable measure–professional or ethical—this made no sense.
“You should both start packing up your desks,” Isabella said, her tone firm as she glanced at the two women still rooted in place.
They stammered weakly before turning desperate eyes toward Xavier. “Mr. Moore, even if we made a mistake… we’ve worked hard for this company for years. This is Moore Group–your company. You can’t just play favorites and ignore what’s best for everyone-”
“Precisely because this is my company,” Xavier interrupted, his voice steady and final, “I cannot allow anyone to disrespect my wife here.”
His words seemed to freeze the air in the pantry.
Wife?
Isabella was Mr. Moore’s wife?

Which meant… she was effectively the first lady of Moore Group?

Before the taller woman could fully process what she’d heard, her legs gave out and she slumped to the floor.
Offending Isabella was one thing. Being fired from Moore Group was another. But crossing Xavier Moore personally? Their careers in this city–perhaps anywhere in the industry–were effectively over.
Isabella had expected Xavier to support her because of their arrangement, but she never imagined he would publicly acknowledge their marriage.
By saying it here, in front of these employees, the news would spread throughout the company by the end of the day.
She remembered all too clearly how, when they first married, Xavier had firmly instructed her never to reveal their relationship to anyone at work. He cared deeply about Moore Group’s reputation, his own public image… What had changed since then?
By the time Xavier had finished addressing the situation, a small crowd had gathered outside the pantry. The two women hurried out in tears, utterly humiliated.
Xavier gave Isabella a calm, lingering look before turning to Amelia. “Please brew a fresh pot of coffee. Isabella can show you how I prefer it.”
Isabella felt a quiet stir in her chest. She had made coffee for Xavier many times before–back when she was just another employee trying to earn her place. Back when she never imagined standing beside him like this.
