It turned out that, aside from the coffee she prepared, the man hardly ever drank it—not even the popular brews from the high–end cafes around town.
But they had already agreed she wouldn’t act as his assistant anymore.
After Xavier left, Isabella walked Amelia through making the coffee herself. There wasn’t anything especially complicated about it–just the milk and sugar ratio she’d fine–tuned through trial and error until it was memorized.
While learning, Amelia couldn’t help remarking, “Isabella, Mr. Moore really seems to look out for you! He won’t even let you make coffee when he’s the one asking for it.”
“You think so?” Isabella offered a faint, uneasy smile. It was true–after Xavier had backed her up without hesitation in front of those employees earlier, even she was starting to feel she could rely on his goodwill.
Once the departmental transfers were finalized, Isabella’s office suddenly became a steady stream of visitors. Colleagues stopped by for work guidance, some just to say hello, and a few brought along snacks or small gifts.
Isabella understood–her status as Xavier’s wife was now an open secret across the entire
company.
Just before lunch, Xavier called an emergency meeting, and Isabella was asked to attend.
As Jacob announced on Xavier’s behalf that the company would be appointing a new vice president, Isabella’s attention drifted to her phone.
Jason had sent a video call request. They’d originally planned to talk during her lunch break, but now that break had been swallowed up by the meeting.
She declined the call and quickly texted him, asking if they could talk a little later.
“Let’s give a warm round of applause to congratulate Ms. Isabella Carter!”
Jacob’s voice suddenly rose above the murmurs, startling Isabella so much she nearly dropped her phone.
Hearing her own name, she glanced up in surprise to find the entire room applauding. Seated directly across from her, Xavier watched her closely, his deep eyes taking in every shift in her expression.

Before she could fully process what was happening, Xavier’s calm, cool voice cut through the noise. “Alright, let’s hear a few words from our new vice president.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the applause died down. Every eye in the room was now fixed on Isabella.
What in the world? Vice president?
One minute she was an executive secretary, and now he was promoting her directly to VP… Xavier was clearly doing this to catch her off guard.
After a brief pause, Isabella reluctantly rose to her feet. “Thank you for the company’s trust,” she said simply, before sitting back down.
The room fell silent. Everyone seemed unsure how to react–was that really all she had to say? Most people, upon being promoted to vice president, would thank Xavier personally and then say something inspiring about leading the team and driving the company forward.
“Clap, clap-”
But while everyone else hesitated, Xavier was the first to begin applauding. Following his lead, another round of enthusiastic applause quickly filled the room.
After the meeting ended, Isabella waited until everyone had filtered out before approaching Xavier alone.
He had been speaking quietly with Jacob, but upon seeing Isabella, he gave a slight nod, and Jacob excused himself.
“Xavier, what are you doing?”
Isabella didn’t understand. Not only had he made their relationship public, but now he was naming her vice president. Wasn’t he concerned about how this would look for the company?
“Isn’t it a good thing? This way, no one in the company except me can give you orders.” Xavier’s voice was even, and as he spoke, the corner of his mouth lifted slightly. “Besides, it makes my position clear.”
“Your position?” Isabella looked at him, confused. The man slowly stood, his tall frame making her feel even smaller in comparison.
“From now on, I’ll trust you unconditionally.”
Xavier’s tone always carried a certain coolness, but the deliberateness in his words made each one feel unexpectedly weighty–almost like a promise.

Trust unconditionally? Isabella’s heart fluttered. Is he responding to what I’d said last night?

Seeing her slightly dazed expression, the gleam in Xavier’s deep eyes seemed to brighten. He reached out suddenly and drew her into a brief, steady embrace.
“Xavier…”
Isabella came back to herself, but Xavier’s arms were already loosening. He released her after just a moment, not leaving her time to fully react.
“I have work to finish. We’ll leave together tonight.”
His words were calm and detached once more, as if the warmth that had just lingered around Isabella was nothing but an illusion.
That afternoon, Isabella logged into the Moore Group system on her computer to review business reports.
After being promoted to vice president, her account granted access to nearly every platform within the company.
Only one core area remained restricted–the Moore Group encryption key. That database held the corporation’s most critical business secrets, and access was reserved for Xavier alone.
Isabella stared at the password field for the encryption key, her thoughts drifting back to the way Xavier had looked at her earlier. Lately, his gaze had become harder and harder to read…
She’d even begun to wonder if there was something softer in the way he watched her, and his words had started to sound unusually gentle…
Her heart skipped a beat just as the phone on her desk began to ring, pulling her abruptly back to the present.
