“Mr. Moore, you have several client dinners scheduled for this evening. I’ve arranged them back–to–back to maximize your time.”
Xavier took a slow sip of his coffee.
Amelia had received some pointers from Isabella, but the brew still wasn’t quite right. After one taste, he set the mug down and glanced at her. She was wearing nothing but a thin black dress.
“Who told you to dress like that?”
His tone was cool, but Amelia didn’t flinch. “I brought a blazer. Since I’m attending the dinners tonight, I thought I should look the part.”
Her words felt familiar.
Back when Isabella was still new, he’d criticized her once for showing up to a business dinner underdressed. She’d explained awkwardly then that she’d read online how some executives expected their assistants to dress–hinting that looking attractive could help in closing deals. Xavier had almost choked on his coffee.
He hadn’t argued at the time, just told her firmly to change, and left her behind that evening.
Later, Jacob mentioned seeing her crying quietly at her desk.
Over time, Isabella learned–her style became more polished, though Xavier’s stern expression never really softened.
Looking back now, he’d treated her almost like property.
“My dinners don’t require that kind of outfit.”
Feeling an unexpected twinge of discomfort, Xavier responded more gently than he’d intended. There was almost a note of concern in his voice.
Amelia seemed surprised, as if she hadn’t expected that from him. A faint smile touched her lips. “Is that so? Thank you for letting me know, Mr. Moore. It won’t happen again.”
“I’m sending someone else in my place tonight. You should be careful, too,” Xavier added flatly.
“You’re not going?” Amelia asked, unable to hide her curiosity.

Xavier usually avoided social events, but this dinner had been specially arranged by him during a prior meeting. The attendees were important–people he needed to meet.
“No.” His voice was low. “Don’t schedule anything for me in the evenings from now on. I leave right after work.”
After work, he needed to go home for the therapy sessions with the little one.
By his old standards, letting personal matters interfere with work was unacceptable. And now, it was all for someone else’s child.
A dull ache tightened in Xavier’s chest, but he didn’t have the energy to dwell on it.
“Why is she here?”
Amelia looked startled and opened her mouth to say more, but Xavier cut her off.
His eyes were fixed on Isabella’s office. The usually dark room was now lit up. Isabella had just arrived and was already walking out, heading straight for his office.
“You can go.”
“Yes, Mr. Moore.”
Amelia left reluctantly, offering a slight nod.
On her way out, she passed Isabella in the hallway and smiled. “Good evening, Mrs. Moore.”
But something felt off to Isabella. There was a change in the young woman–a new confidence, maybe.
After the greeting, Amelia walked by, leaving a strong trail of perfume in her wake. It smelled like a classic, expensive brand–something Isabella hadn’t noticed on her before. Not long ago, Amelia had been a quiet intern who didn’t even wear scent.
“Looking for me?”
Xavier’s voice brought Isabella back. She replied with a soft “Mm,” pulled out a chair, and sat across from his desk.
“We need to talk.”
She kept her voice low, trying to sound steady.
Truthfully, since the incident with Jason, she’d felt at a disadvantage around Xavier. He hadn’t
