Before, Xavier had refused to go through with the divorce because he was hurt by her betrayal. But lately, his behavior toward her hadn’t felt as distant or severe as it once did.
Isabella began to wonder if they could finally have an honest conversation.
She had laid her heart on the line–surely he would meet her halfway now.
But as soon as the words left her mouth, a cold shadow flickered in the man’s eyes.
Xavier stayed quiet for a long moment before letting out a low, humorless laugh.
“You think that’s the only reason I didn’t want the divorce?”
What other reason could there be?
If not that… then what?
“I already have Jason in my life. No matter what, I won’t be having more children…”
Isabella caught herself and quickly added, though even as she spoke, she knew it sounded off.
Yes, his grandfather had always wanted a great–grandson, but Xavier wasn’t one to follow anyone’s expectations blindly.
If he were, there would’ve been a line of women hoping to have his child. And yet all these years, Xavier had never married, never had kids.
He hadn’t even given Linda the time of day, no matter how hard she tried.
Isabella knew why, too–there was someone else in his heart, someone he could never have.
“So that means… you still don’t want to let me go, Xavier-”
Isabella blinked, but before she could finish, her words were swallowed.
Xavier stood abruptly, cupped her face in his hands, and pressed his lips to hers, his eyes closed.
Isabella’s mind went blank. All she could hear was the frantic drumming of her own heart.
She didn’t even remember to close her eyes. Watching him lose himself in the kiss, she felt a strange sense of déjà vu.

As if they’d been this close before…
But how was that possible?

In their three years of marriage, she’d kept things strictly professional between them–if anything, more formal at home than in public.
Xavier’s features were etched in shadow, intense and overwhelming. His lips tasted faintly of mint, cool at first, but with one gentle brush, they set her whole body on fire.
For the first time, Isabella didn’t pull away–and that was all the encouragement he needed.
His fingers slid into her hair, his thumb brushing gently near the corner of her eye.
That touch suddenly took her back five years… to that hazy, half–remembered night…
She’d dreamed about it since.
In the dream, someone kept kissing her, fingers woven in her hair, tenderly stroking the space beside her eye.
Xavier’s movements now mirrored that dream perfectly.
“Do you understand now?”
Xavier’s voice brought her back. Her lips still tingled.
It was like an electric current running through her, tangling her senses and emotions into a messy, breathless knot.
She nodded without thinking, then quickly shook her head.
Heat rushed to her cheeks, burning all the way to the tips of her ears.
“If you don’t get it,” Xavier murmured, a glint of mischief in his gaze as he watched her like she was the most tempting kind of prey, “we can always try again.”
Isabella startled and immediately covered her mouth with her hand.
Xavier took in the dazed shimmer in her eyes, and something warm and unsteady rose in his chest. He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to her palm.
Isabella felt the light scratch of his stubble, the warmth of his breath damp against her skin.
It sent a shiver through her, sharp and sweet.

She had never seen Xavier like this before…

When that usual guarded mask slipped, even for a second, he looked… unbearably attractive.
“Isabella, I don’t want to divorce you.”
Before she could process that, he continued.
They were so close now. Leaning over the desk, he caged her slender frame beneath him.
The fine wool of his suit jacket creased neatly at the elbows, right beside Isabella’s cheek.
She was almost distracted enough to reach out and smooth the fabric.
Xavier never tolerated wrinkles in his clothes. In the past, he’d change if he so much as shifted
in his seat.
“It’s not that I can’t sign the papers,” he went on, voice low. “It’s that I don’t want to. I wouldn’t be able to handle it.”
He paused.
Cool fingers tilted her chin up, forcing her eyes back to his.
He spoke slowly, carefully, as if weighing each word, afraid she might miss his meaning.
The corner of his mouth lifted slightly, though inwardly he felt utterly helpless.
He’d never been good at saying things like this–but this woman had backed him into a corner, leaving him no way out but the truth.
