Amelia quickly stepped forward to welcome Linda, guiding her toward the seating area off to the side. Xavier lay sprawled across the sofa, deep in a drunken slumber.
Even unconscious, he carried an air of magnetic charm–yet the proud, untouchable man she had always admired now looked utterly worn down and spent.
“Xavier…”
Linda’s heart softened. She reached out as if to brush his cheek, but stopped short, not wanting to wake him.
In all her years by Xavier’s side, she’d only seen him this broken once before–five years ago, when he’d been rushed to the emergency room. Back then, she’d sworn to herself that no one would ever hurt him like that again.
“Why did he let himself drink this much?” Linda asked through gritted teeth, her eyes fixed on the sharp lines of his face, which had only grown more hollow these past few days.
Amelia observed Linda quietly from behind, taking in every shift in her expression, every hesitant gesture. A faint, almost imperceptible smirk touched the corner of her lips before she smoothed her features back into concern.
“I’m not entirely sure,” Amelia replied softly after a pause. “Mr. Moore has been in a terrible mood all day. It started right after Mrs. Moore stopped by earlier. And just before you arrived, he actually called her… asked her to come pick him up. She turned him down.”
She let the words hang, then added with careful neutrality, ‘It’s clear he cares deeply about her, but for some reason, they always seem to end up at odds.”
Linda’s eyes darkened. Her slender fingers curled tightly into her palms.
Isabella… you have everything I’ve ever wanted. How can you treat him like this?
Without another word, Linda bent down, slipping one of Xavier’s arms over her shoulders as she tried to lift him. But his solid, muscular frame was too much for her slender build, and she staggered under his weight.

Amelia hurried over to help, and together they managed to half–walk, half–drag Xavier out to Linda’s car parked
outside.
After settling him into the back seat, Linda shut the door firmly and turned to Amelia.
“You should head home and get some rest. I’ll take him from here.”
“Are you sure, Linda? It’s really no trouble–”
“It’s fine. Xavier’s safe with me.”
Linda’s tone left no room for argument. She offered a brief, polite smile before sliding into the driver’s seat without waiting for a reply.

The moment Linda’s car pulled away, Amelia’s innocent, helpful demeanor vanished. She walked briskly to the sedan Jacob had arranged for her and go inside, following at a discreet distance. Just as she suspected–Linda wasn’t heading toward Xavier’s place.
A cool, knowing smile played on Amelia’s lips as she pulled out her phone and pulled up Isabella’s contact.

Meanwhile, Isabella was still wide awake, unable to settle after Xavier’s late–night call. She’d already tucked the little boy next to her under the covers and turned off the lights, hoping sleep would come.
But the small figure behind her kept shifting and rustling, clearly just as restless as she was.
Skyler’s mind was racing.
Even though Daddy could be difficult and wasn’t always nice to Mommy… he was still his dad. And Mommy’s husband!
He’d heard enough outside the bathroom earlier to piece it together: Daddy had been drinking, couldn’t get home on his own, and wanted Mommy to come get him. And there was another woman with him.
From the tone Mommy had used on the phone and the look on her face, Skyler could tell–that woman was trouble.
The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. And the angrier he got, the more determined he became.
Even if he and Mommy were mad at Daddy or wanted to teach him a lesson… that was their business. No one else was allowed to just swoop in and take him away!
Just as Skyler came to that resolve, he and Isabella turned toward each other at the same time, ending up face in the dim room.
“Jason… you really want me to go pick up Daddy, don’t you?”
face–to-
Their eyes met, and their thoughts aligned perfectly. It was as if Isabella could hear her son’s unspoken words.
Skyler nodded emphatically, his cheeks puffing out with a fiercely protective look, like a little knight ready for battle.
“That face…” Isabella murmured, almost to herself. “You look just like Skyler when he loses a video game.”
I never lose! Skyler wanted to protest. And when I do, it’s definitely my teammates‘ fault!
But with Isabella watching him so closely, he kept his expression carefully neutral, even though it nearly gave him emotional whiplash.
“Okay,” Isabella said with a soft sigh. “I’ll go get him. But only because you want me to.”
