Watching the woman scurry away like a stray cat dodging traffic, Isabella finally felt a longoverdue wave of
satisfaction settle over her.
“Linda, if you had any real backbone, you’d get Xavier to divorce me and marry you instead. Then you could be with him out in the open. But as long as I’m still his wife, all you get to do is cry and take the hit.”
Truth be told, Isabella wasn’t blind to what had really gone down today–Linda had basically been putting on a onewoman show the whole time.
No matter how reckless Xavier could be, he wasn’t the type to revisit an old flame.
Linda had been out of the picture for a while now, tossed aside just like Isabella had been.
Women simply weren’t high on Xavier’s list of priorities.
Linda shot Isabella a look brimming with humiliation and resentment.
Even though Xavier and Isabella had reacted differently, in that moment they seemed strangely in sync–she could almost see a thread of trust running between them.
It didn’t make sense.
Her chest heaved once, twice, before she finally shoved past Isabella and bolted out of the room.
Silence seeped back into the space.
“Amelia’s waiting for you downstairs,” Isabella said, glancing away from the doorway Linda had vanished through. Her eyes swept over Xavier, who still hadn’t bothered to put his shirt back on. “I’m heading out.”
She turned to leave, but before her hand could touch the doorknob-
“Bang.”
The door slammed shut, Xavier’s palm flat against, it just above her shoulder. He closed the distance behind her, his breath warm against the nape of her neck. “Don’t you even want an explanation?”
She stiffened.
“Are you still drunk?”
Isabella tried to shift away from his arm, turning her head to look at him.
He had her caged against the door now, facetoface, close enough that she could still see the flush high on his cheeks.
“I asked you a question,” Xavier pressed, his voice lower, thicker. His exhale washed over her, hotter than before.

Trapped, Isabella frowned. “Everything’s right here in front of me. What is there to ask? Besides, I don’t really
care.”
“You don’t care… yet you went after Linda and threw all those insults my way?” His logic was so twisted it almost made her laugh. “If you weren’t upset, wouldn’t what she did have been exactly what you wanted?”
Isabella hadn’t expected Xavier to get this… needy. She’d just been tearing into him–how did that suddenly become about her being jealous?
“And what you saw wasn’t real,” he went on, the words rough but clear. “I was too drunk to think straight, but the person on my mind wasn’t Linda. I wouldn’t go back to her.”
That low, blunt admission hit Isabella square in the chest, sending a weird, tingling rush through her.
The person on his mind isn’t Linda… Is it me?
She felt her ears grow warm.
Here he goes again with this act. I’ve never known he turns so… forward when he is drunk.
“Real or not, it doesn’t change anything. I’ve got proof of you and Linda together. I can still file for-”
Before she could finish, Xavier silenced her with his mouth.
She didn’t even have time to raise her hands and push him away.
And he didn’t let up. His kiss deepened, pressing her back against the door until she was flush against his chest.
Then Isabella felt it–the hard heat against her hip–and she froze.
She shoved hard, finally breaking the kiss and putting a few inches between them.
“Xavier… what the hell are you doing? Didn’t you say you’d respect what I want?”
“Sorry…” His breathing was ragged, but he didn’t retreat. His eyes held hers, intense, full of something she’d never seen in him before–a raw tenderness. No, it was more than that. Something deeper, hungrier. “But… the color of your lips today… it’s really beautiful.”
Isabella’s mind blanked. How was she supposed to respond to that?
Besides, it was just her natural lip color–no gloss, no lipstick. What was so beautiful about it?
“Xavier, let me go. This is too close.”
Worried he might lose control again, she kept her voice calm, trying to reason with him. But she could already feel him leaning in again, his body radiating a feverish heat. She was starting to sweat now, too.
“I want to…” Xavier murmured beside her ear, his tone soft, coaxing. “But I… I want you so bad it hurts.”
