Chapter 153 Burning Up

When he stepped out of the bathroom and saw her standing there, he knew things were about to go south.
It wasn’t that he worried she’d get the wrong idea–it was the state he was in right now.
Isabella’s mind went blank for a second. She didn’t need anyone to spell it out; she could tell exactly what had happened to Xavier just by looking at him.
His pulse was racing visibly, and judging from his flushed face and unsteady breathing, he was hanging on by a thread.
“Can you hold on? I’ll take you to the ER.”
Xavier tried to pull away from her touch, his voice strained. “You should go… If i stay close, I won’t be able to stop myself.”
Isabella’s heart hammered in her chest. She bent down quickly to pick his clothes up from the floor, intending to help him get dressed, but the moment she leaned in, his arms wrapped around her from behind, pulling her against him.
“Xavier, just hang in there a little longer.”
She placed her hand over his. His skin burned like a furnace just touching him made her own temperature seem to rise.
“Just for a minute… let me hold you like this… Don’t worry, I won’t… do anything else.”
His voice came again, low and rough, right beside her ear.
His breathing was heavy, labored; he was holding back with everything he had, and part of him was clearly leaning into her to ease the tension.
[ Isabella felt her face grow hot. Against her will, her mind flashed back to her first time–years ago, in the dark, her thoughts completely fogged, when someone had held her just like this from behind.
For a moment, her focus drifted. Against her back, she could feel Xavier’s chest rising and falling violently, his whole body starting to tremble beyond his control.
His hands shifted slightly, as if wanting to wander, but at the last moment they stilled, tangled gently in her hair instead. “I’m sorry…”
“Is it really… that bad?”
Isabella’s voice came out softer than she meant it to.
If she said she felt nothing toward Xavier, she’d be lying.

Next to him now, her own hands were clenched into tight fists.
The truth was, just like him, she was fighting her own battle to stay composed.

“Yeah,” Xavier managed, his voice scraped raw and oddly captivating in its roughness. “It’s bad… feels like I’m burning up from the inside.“/
Hearing that, something tightened in Isabella’s chest
She reached for his hand, her instinct telling her to turn and hold him properly.
But reason caught up just in time.
“Let’s get you to the bed. Sit down for a bit.”
She hooked his arm over her shoulder, taking half his weight, and slowly guided him toward the mattress.
Even though Xavier was tall, he wasn’t overly heavy–and as she supported him, she realized he was leaner than he looked.
“I’ll call 911, then get some cold water to cool you down.”
Truth be told, Isabella had briefly considered calling Harry.
But given how late it was, an ambulance felt like the more straightforward option.
Whatever he’d been given wasn’t lethal, but it was clearly hell to ride out. Xavier looked like he was at his absolute limit.
“Don’t… You should go. I’ll get through it.”
Xavier stopped her, speaking slowly, each word an effort.
His cheeks were still flushed with that unnatural heat, but his expression had cooled somewhat, regaining a trace of steadiness.
Isabella didn’t answer, but she slipped her phone back into her pocket.
Xavier probably didn’t want to be hauled off in an ambulance over something like this anyway.
Fair enough.
Her eyes drifted toward the door. Leaving now would be the cleanest way out–no one could blame her for it.
But she couldn’t make herself take that step.
Instead, she turned and walked straight into the bathroom without looking back, ran a towel under cold water, and wrung it out.

She’d never dealt with anything like this before, but cooling him down physically had to help somehow.
Steeling herself, she walked back out.

When she returned, Xavier had somehow pulled on a shirt arid pants, though they were haphazardly buttoned and hung loosely. He was trying to stand but swayed unsteadily.
Isabella rushed over and steadied him by the arm. “Stop pushing yourself. Just sit down and rest.”
“Why didn’t you leave?” His words came out broken, barely audible, yet he still found the breath to tease her. “If I really lose it… don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Isabella shot him a look and made her tone deliberately sharp. “Looks like you’re mostly through the worst of it anyway. Try anything funny in this state, and I could take you down bare–handed.”
“You’d really do that?”
Xavier lowered his head, his lips brushing lightly against her ear as he spoke.
His tone was light, but his voice had softened, carrying a tenderness that made something ache in Isabella’s chest.
She looked up and met his eyes. Even with his body burning up, his gaze was clear and steady, like ice reflecting her own face back at her.
And in that reflection, she saw the same emotion staring right back.
After just a few seconds, she glanced away. “Why wouldn’t I? I did it once before… five years ago.
She muttered the words quickly, almost letting them slip past.
But Xavier caught every one.
Each syllable hit him deep, shaking him straight through to his bones, to every cell in his body.
