The maid found herself facing a woman in a striking outfit, holding a little boy against her shoulder The child had turned his face away, hiding from view.
Both Jacob and Harry followed the beam of the flashlight bqtil it landed squarely on Harinah.
She was dressed in an edgy, all–black leather jacket and matching pants, with dark sunglasses pushed up on her head. Head–to–toe black should’ve been the most low–key choice for a night like this–but under the direct glare of the flashlight, she looked like she’d stepped onto a stage, completely out of place.
Everyone’s expression shifted to pure surprise. Showing up at someone’s door dressed like that in the middle of the night wasn’t exactly normal.
“Looks like I’ve got the wrong address. Sorry
to bother you.”
Hannah tried to play it cool and turn to leave, but Harry’s voice stopped her before she could take a step.
“Hannah?”
Jacob had already been thinking the woman looked vaguely familiar–like someone he’d seen before–but before he could ask, Harry spoke up first.
Harry himself looked just as stunned. The woman in front of him was unmistakably Hannah. But what was she doing here, at this. hour?
“You know her, Dr. Ashford?” Jacob asked quietly.
So was she here to see Harry? He’d never heard anything about Harry having a family–was this some kind of secret wife and kid situation?
“Yeah, I do.”
Harry’s gaze flickered. He answered briefly, then strode straight over to Hannah. Her nerves tightened as he placed a band firmly on her shoulder.
“What are you doing here?”
He was standing so close now that there was hardly any space between them—just little Jason, still tucked against her.
Harry kept his voice low, meant for her ears only.
Jason began to stir, starting to turn his head, but Hannah quickly pressed her palm gently against his back, keeping him still.
Before she could even form a reply, movement came from the direction of the maid.
“Jason? What are you doing out of your room?”
From behind the maid, a small figure darted out and ran straight into Jacob’s leg.
Skyler had slipped out the moment he got Hannah’s text.

Seeing both Jacob and Harry standing there, he knew this was bad news. Harry had seen him at the hospital before. If he spotted Jason with Hannah now, the whole secret would unravel.
Skyler had been hiding off to the side. Once he realized Hannah had caught on, he made a run for it, clinging dramatically to Jacob’s leg to pull attention away from the doorway.
Hearing the commotion, Hannah panicked. She grabbed Harry’s wrist.
“I–I came to find you. There’s something I need to talk to you about.”
Before the words were fully out, Harry wrapped an arm around both her and Jason, drawing them close against his side.
“Let’s talk on the way.”
His deep voice brushed past her ear. Before she could protest, she was being guided firmly back toward a parked car, feeling almost like a startled bird caught in his grip.
Hannah wanted to say she’d driven herself here, but Harry didn’t give her the chance.
She’q barely settled into the back seat with Jason when Harry slid in right beside her, closing the door behind him.
“What are you-?”
With him now sitting so close, Hannah felt a rush of nerves.
Jason pressed himself deeper into her side, too.
Harry reached over and switched on the dome light. In the soft glow, he took in the sight of the two of them staring back at him with uneasy expressions- -as if he were some kind of threat. He couldn’t help a faint, amused smile.
“I thought you said you needed to talk to me?” His tone held a hint of playfulness. As he tilted his head slightly, his breath grazed her ear lightly.
Hannah blinked a few times, hesitating before she managed, “Well, it’s… actually not that urgent. I just… wanted to…”
For a moment, no good excuse came to mind.
“How did you know I’d be here, anyway?”
Harry cut in, his eyes tracing the faint blush that had risen to her cheeks in the dim light. She looked genuinely flustered–and honestly, kind of adorable.
“Well…” Hannah’s discomfort grew. She forced a weak smile, her palms growing clammy.
Right. How was she supposed to explain that?
“… followed you,” she finally said after a long pause.
