Chapter 25 An Unexpected Reunion

Jason had drawn a family of cats: a mother cat, a father cat, and three kittens. The mother cat was with the three kittens, while the father cat was positioned separately, off to the side. One of the kittens was gazing at the distant father cat all alone.

That solitary kitten was clearly Jason himself.

isabella had asked him before if he ever wished for a father. Each time, Jason would study her face carefully and then firmly shake his head no. He had never drawn pictures like this at home.

Right then, Isabella felt a heavy weight drop in her chest. It sank so deeply she could hardly breathe. She had always believed she was being sensitive to her child’s feelings, but it seemed she was the one who had been shielded.

When Jason finished his drawing and saw Isabella, he immediately jumped into her arms, his face lighting up. The little boy was so perceptive. Afraid he would notice her emotional turmoil, Isabella matched his excitement as they played together.

After a while, seeing Isabella needed to leave, Jason took her hand in his small one and walked her obediently to the classroom

door.

“Are you Jason’s mother? Hello, I’m Sander Whitman, the school counselor working with Jason. Could we speak for a moment?”

Just as Isabella was saying goodbye, a clear male voice spoke from behind her.

“Yes, I’m his mother… It’s you.” Isabella turned and was immediately

aback.

Sander before her was tall and slightly slender, with handsome, refined features and a pair of gentle, gold–rimmed glasses. He carried a calm, scholarly air. Compared to five years ago, he seemed more mature.

“Isabella… you’re alive?” Sander reached for her arm as if to pull her into an embrace.

But Jason suddenly stepped between them, causing both Isabella and Sander to take a half–step back.

“Sander. It’s been a long time.” Isabella was surprised. In her memory, he had been a reserved academic, the type who couldn’t even cry in front of others when his father passed away. This kind of raw, panicked emotion wasn’t like him.

Ten minutes later, Sander and Isabella walked out of the school building together.

The scene was witnessed by Xavier from his car. He hadn’t been able to get the woman’s phone call from that morning out of his head. He felt compelled to see what kind of man had inspired her betrayal.

The moment he saw Sander, Xavier felt his blood run cold, then hot. He got out of the car, but at that moment, his phone vibrated.

It was Isabella calling.

Xavier hesitated. His fingertip, hovering over the answer button, trembled slightly, and he didn’t pick up.

His heart was pounding, a rapid, painful rhythm he didn’t understand.

Isabella called three times in succession, with no answer.

“Is it work?” Sander asked beside her.

“Yes, I need to request some personal time.” Isabella didn’t feel like elaborating. “I’ll just send a text.”

Based on her understanding of Xavier, he was deliberately ignoring her. If he was in a meeting, he would have given his phone to Jacob, who would have certainly answered.

If he simply couldn’t take the call, he would have declined it outright. He hated persistent ringing more than anything.

But for Jason’s sake, Xavier’s temper was the least of her concerns.

After sending a brief text requesting the morning off, Isabella smiled at Sander, and they walked together toward the counseling center across the street.

Once they entered, Xavier followed, striding after them. He trailed them to the elevator bank, but they disappeared once the doors closed. He pressed the call button anyway. Inside the empty elevator, staring at the panel of floor numbers, he frowned.

Just as he was considering whether to call Sander directly, the elevator doors opened again on another floor–but no one was waiting
